Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryThe idea is that waste materials pass through a conveyor belt and an overhead camera captures the image of materials passing by, and the AI model using different techniques identifies each waste item and segregates it into predefined categories. In addition to it, the system creates a log of all the waste items that it classifies and keeps a count. This data will be used to recognize patterns in frequency of disposal of certain materials, say for example plastic bottles. Then it can be used in prediction of waste generation in the years to come. The expected outcome of this project is that it will eventually be able to predict how much of something will be disposed in the future.
Project Objectives- To develop a system that promotes recycling by :
- Automating separation process thereby optimizing it. This should as a result

- Make recycling more widespread and accepted in developing countries.

- To determine future waste disposal using the data that this system acquires overtime
- To aid municipal services in managing their waste disposal facilities. In doing so they should be able to anticipate provisions they need to make to manage waste.
- To keep track of how certain materials grew in demand over a certain period of Observation.
We intend to make use of various machine learning techniques like CNN, RNN, SVM etc. for identification and classification of waste materials. In addition, inferential statistics will play a major role in determining the frequency of future waste disposals of certain items using algorithms such as linear regression, decision tree etc. Equipment and tools used for this project will include Google Colaboratory, Jupyter Notebook, Pycharm, Overhead Camera, and Conveyor Belt. Machine learning requires copious amounts of data and this necessitates data collection. To effectuate this we will place dustbins around the university campus. Written on these dustbins will be the categories of waste material we intend to collect as data for this project. The implementation of proposed project however, may not be limited to methodologies and equipment mentioned and other ways of implementation can be opted on as-needed basis and/or for optimization purpose.
Benefits of the ProjectSupplementing the recycling process comes from the need to eliminate garbage from our city and country as a whole. We already do have landfill sites filled with all sorts of garbage that only seems to increase in number and nothing useful comes out of it. In order to benefit the environment and possibly the economy as well, we found the need for recycling of materials. One very crucial part of any recycling process is separation of recyclable material from the non-recyclable material; further bifurcation is also needed to separate items on the basis of material type. This process is usually done by human labor at that obviously comes with its shortcomings. In order to optimize this process, the need for automating arises and we hope to achieve this through various machine learning and statistical techniques.The proposed concept will help in effectively eradicating the waste and trash from the country.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final technical deliverable of this project will include a conveying system on which waste material will be made to pass through. An overhead camera will be mounted that will capture pictures of that waste material and pass those images on to a computer system where classification will take place and data recorded into the database for prediction of future waste disposals.
