Real Time IoT Based Water Quality Monitoring System
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe world is moving towards technology rapidly and with the marvelous innovations the life has become easier than before. But still in the 21st century, some developing countries like Pakistan are facing with the problem of water pollution. About 20% of the whole population of Pakistan has access to safe drinking water. The remaining 80% of population is forced to use unsafe drinking water due to the scarcity of safe and healthy drinking water sources. The messy and dirty water is still being used for drinking purpose without any monitoring and filtering system. This water pollution is one of the major causes for various types of water-borne diseases such as dengue, cholera and malaria etc. 40% of deaths in worldwide are caused by water pollution. Besides the human being the water pollution is also dangerous for animals and agriculture. Therefore, for the socio-economic growth of the country the system is required that monitor the quality of water.
In Pakistan, the monitoring of water quality is done on weekly, monthly or yearly basis but the quality parameters of water are changing continuously. So, there is need of developing better methodologies to monitor the parameters of water in real time. Therefore, in this project, we present a system for real time monitoring of the water quality based on IoT (internet of things).
The system consist of several sensors is used to measuring physical and chemical parameters of the water. The parameters such as temperature, PH, turbidity, conductivity of the water can be measured. The microcontroller will obtain and process the data from the sensors and sent the data to the IoT cloud server (Arduino IoT Cloud) through LoRa WAN gateway. LoRa has the long range as compared to the Wi-Fi module or GSM. It can send the data to 10s of kilometre. It is lower power consumption technology. At dashboard, the received data is visualized and analysed. In the end, we are able to determine the quality of water.
Project Objectives- To develop a system to monitor real time IoT based quality of water
- Measure the pH level, turbidity, conductivity, and temperature of water to check the quality of water.
- To save the life of human beings keep them safe from dirty water by monitoring its quality.
- Provide a tool to the water quality monitoring authorities like Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) to monitor real time quality of water.
We will implement the project as per the following plane.
- Literature Review
- Study and interface Sensors with microcontroller
- Implementation of Model
- Analysis & Simulation
- Final Write-up &Thesis Submission
- Water suppliers and utilities need to ensure the supply of nutrient-rich water that the consumers can use for drinking and other purposes. By implementing IoT based solutions of water quality measurement, the utilities can monitor the quality of the distributed w ater in overhead tanks and even in pipelines.
- By using the technology of Internet of Things, the method of measuring water quality can be done automatically from far off locations.
- The project can be beneficial to measure quality of water easily, effectively and in short time so that the necessary actions can be taken to avoid any unhealthy situation.
- Wastewater generated is to be treated and managed before it is discharged into a freshwater body. Parameters like temperature, turbidity, and TDS are hence to be monitored to make sure that the water is treated properly before it is secreted. Smart water quality monitoring system using IoT optimize the inspection processes and hence reduce the need for manual interference.
- Waterborne diseases can be reduced by determining the drinking water quality through this system.
Basically the goal of our project is to determine the real time IoT based quality of water The project will comprises of different sensors like pH sensor, Turbidity sensor, Total dissolve solid (TDS) sensor and Temperature sensor. These sensors will be used to determine the characteristics of water. The data from these sensors will be acquired by microcontroller sends to the IoT cloud through the gateway. The data on the IoT cloud can be visualized and analyzed on the dashboard.
