As the old process of meter reading involves a lot of human effort and also requires handsome amount of money used for employee payments, printing expenses, paper costs etc. The old system is not time efficient and the bill debts could not be recovered, that leads to the downfall at producers end. It is well known that some specific people or areas are declared as bill defaulters. This problem could be removed by using the smart card energy meter. The developed hardware could be installed on the pre-existing meters and will be functional. The users are provided with smart cards that will be used for recharge purpose.

Power utilities in different countries especially in the developing ones are incurring huge losses due to electricity theft. This paper proposes a prepaid energy metering system to control electricity theft. In this system a smart energy meter is installed in every consumer unit and a server is maintained at the service provider side. Both the meter and the server are equipped with GSM module which facilitates bidirectional communication between the two ends using the existing GSM infrastructure. Consumers can easily recharge their energy meter by sending a PIN number hidden in a scratch card to the server using SMS. This paper presents some measures to control meter bypassing and tampering. The bi-directional GSM communication using SMS ensures the effectiveness of these measures. Pilferage of electricity can be substantially reduced by incorporating the proposed measures along with the prepaid metering scheme. Legal actions against dishonest consumers can also be taken in this system.

Project Objectives

We are developing a project that will eliminate the previous problems like poor signals interruption, billing estimations, proxy readings and lack of communication about the consumer’s maximum demand. There is no need to physically bypass the analog energy meter. The system is integrable with the installed analog energy meter. The user just have to place the device directly on the meter and it will be functional. Before that the energy provider representative will upload some basic information about the consumer to the smart energy meter unit like contact number, national identity card number etc.

User will be provided with a smart card having some dedicated amount of energy units according to the present tariff. The designed system is smarter because, it doesn’t depends upon the communicating medium to calculate the units consumed. The computation algorithm is stored inside the device by default and will analyse it automatically. Communication medium will only be consumed for sake of information sharing about the remaining amount and for alert to recharge the system. And the problem of estimated billing will be solved automatically as the user will recharge according to his budget. If the user had consumed 80% of recharged amount, an SMS noti?cation will be forwarded by the system to the users contact number. The user just have to buy another recharge card like the conventional mobile phone recharge card and will have to place it on the card reader and system will automatically update the amount and will forward a SMS noti?cation.

Project Implementation Method
  1. The methodological approach used is electricity bills automated payment. Payment via wireless technology (RFID).                                                                                                                   
  2. Automatic text message on low balance.
  3. Connection lost due to low balance. (Main supply trip down)
  4. When load balance then main supply turned on automatically.
  5. User and consumer both received text messages.
  6. Also home load control through Bluetooth.
Benefits of the Project

Few years ago, there was no concept of automated meter reading but as there was development in modern technology the concept of automated meter reading was introduced. The conventional way used for electricity billing was that a person goes to take meter reading personally. It was most costly and has human error chances. Thus this process was considered economically unfeasible. The principal objective of prepaid billing is to reduce the labor cost and to save time. Due to technological advancement, more important information can be extracted from energy meter for database. It provides better quality of data.

There are many companies who manufacture smart energy meters. They are based on arti?cial intelligence based modernized. But the main ?aw is that these systems are so complex that any energy producer company is not willing to take a risk of capital investment without any conformed output regarding bill collection. The work done by different authors had explained much about the methodology used for getting information from the energy meter and to use it for sake of billing. Some of the basic techniques used are reading meter through image processing, CALL led counting, real time computation of KWH.

There are some drawbacks in these proposed systems. They are not functional if there are poor signals of the communication medium in your area resulting cut off of power. There is no estimated use of units, user have to pay total amount of consumed units.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

1. First we connect all the loads with energy metergy Meter for the load consumptions, that energy meter will chnage the units and we know that our project is working.

2. When we get RFID Card near to RFID reader then it will increment the 20Rs and also increase the units according to the given formulae.

3. Load will start consuming, and the consumption will depends upon the load.

4.  When the balance is less then 10Rs, then the GSM module will automatically send us a notification message.

5.  When the balance is less then 5Rs, then the system will automatically trip down. When you recharge again then system will automatically starts again.

6.  Load control through Bluetooth system.
