Project Title

PMA based therapy device for stroke patients

Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject Summary

Numerous recovery gadgets were outlined to facilitate individuals stricken by stroke or comparable impairing unhealthiness, but those proposed gadgets were not convenient and unmanageable for patients without a therapist. In this way numerous patients are still dependent on the physiotherapist or specialists. Our goal is to design or propose a gadget which is wearable, insubstantial and versatile so that it would enable patients to perform tedious movement treatment more frequently in their homes which is critical in everyday span. Device consists of apparatus that contains Pneumatic tubes which will help the patient arm muscles to contract and release. Moreover, to understand and to control the direction or movement of the arm muscles we will use a proportional controller and solenoid valves for our proposed gadget.

Project Objectives

To improve performance of the limbs which were affected by stroke or any traumatic brain injury and suggesting a mechanically automated structure that could provide assistance in moving hand to exercise the movement of hand in such a way to close and open fingers.

Project Implementation Method

We intend to design a 3D wearable pneumatic hand which is being designed in Autodesk Fusion 360 and then 3D printed. The design and structure has to be hand compatible and easy to deploy. Once the wearable is designed, the next step is to control its movement. To control the movement, we use pneumatic muscles conisting of braided sheating and latex tubing. The idea is that, when the air is inserted into the muscle, the muscle contracts resulting in pull and when in expands, it reaches its mean position. To facilitate the air in and out, we have used 5/2 solenoid valves and pressure regulating valves. Various sensors such as CJ-MCU rotory encoder have also been deployed according to which actuation should happen.

Benefits of the Project

The project is target for the use to patients with stroke working for the well being of the limbs. The project is for the patients to use at home for physiotherapy exercise for muscle contraction and relaxation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product we intend to deliver contains 4 pneumatic muscles in total. Two of them will be placed on upper part of the forearm on the frame and two of them on below part of forearm. Upper two will help in 'pull' and lower two will help in 'push'. The frame (consisting of muscles) that will be employed on user's hand will be skin friendly plastic. A 5/2 solenoid valve will actuate the muscle air flow on basis of CJ-MCU readings. A proportional control valve will control the amount  of air flow in or out.  An air pressure sensor will also be deployed on muscle to read the pressure readings.
