Performance of An Unsaturated Expansive Soil Slope Subjected to Artificial Rain fall Inflitration
Project Area of Specialization Software EngineeringProject SummaryExpansive soil are be found in arid and semi-arid regions. Expansive soil are natural hazard to infrastructure. Expansive soil exists in most of the countries including Pakistan. The presence of expansive soil is reported in reigns like Kohat, Karak, Nowshera and Bunnu etc. the damages causes by these soil are sever in lightly loaded structure i.e. single story buildings, shallow depth of slopes and flexible pavements etc. As limited literature is available on the local expansive soil of Pakistan.
The main objective of the current study is to study the failure mechanism of an expansive soil slope subjected to different types of rain. For this purpose, a model slope will be constructed from the Karak expansive soil. Different types of sensors will be installed in the model slope for calculating the pore water pressure, volumetric water content and soil suction in the physical model.
For subjecting an artificial rainfall on the model slope, a simulator will be develop locally.
Project Objectives- To develop a physical slope model from local problematic soil.
- To fabricate rainfall simulator at low scale.
- To study the failure mechanism of slopes.
- To provide some techniques for stabilization of natural slopes.
- To validate the experimental results of the physical model in Geo studio software.
As there are many slopes exists in northern ares of Pakistan. These slopes are subjected to sever natural enviromental conditions like heavy rain, heavy snowfall etc. Due to this the natural slope excesively fails in heavy rain, causing life loss and infracture in those areas. The failure of slopes and their damages are reported in many literatures. The cost of these failure is more than the other natural hazards. So the current study will be implented in the stabilization ogf natural slopes present in Pakistan.
Benefits of the ProjectThe current study will add useful literature in the existing information on the failure mechanism of natural slopes subjected to environmental agencies. Some stabilization techniques will be provided at the end of this research work for practical stabilization of natural slopes in Pakistan. Similarly, the rainfall simulator can be commercialize on local scale for the subsequent study in this area.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableTo predict the chances failure of existing slopes in the topoghraphy of Pakistan.
To fabricate the low scale rainfall simulater for studying the rain induced failure of expansive soil.
To set an economical technique for the stabilization of slopes.
