Navigational Aid for Blind People
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe final year project is focused on helping the visually impaired people in navigation by using a smart stick with image processing for object detection and recognition. We are implementing image processing to detect different objects and recognize them using the algorithms and libraries of the open cv software. Initially, we are going to detect different objects and diagnose the results we get in real-time and determine how many objects we will be able to detect in the given time constraints. Facial recognition will be implemented through the Haar Cascade classifiers of open cv. The smart stick is designed in such a way that it houses some ultrasonic and water sensors which also help in guiding the individual.
The project uses object detection methods to detect objects and provide the user with voice feedback to help them navigate on a daily basis. The proposed project uses object detection to detect objects and ultrasonic sensors to measure the distance of the user from the obstacles and people in his path and provide feedback accordingly. It uses pre-trained datasets to compare images of the objects with a dataset of images and generates a result accordingly. The proposed system will be able to detect the most common objects that can be present in the user’s path and help him avoid them and navigate around them easily.
Project ObjectivesThe objectives are as follows
- To design a device which helps the full or partially blind people
- To make navigation easy for the blind people
- To create a cost-effective solution for visually impaired people
- To reduce the cost of and make it affordable
The project will be implemented using a single-board computer through which object detection will be done. The single-board computer will be running TensorFlow to detect objects and provide voice feedback. Arduino will be used with some ultrasonic sensors and water detectors to give the user the distance of the object from him and if there's any puddle in his path.
Benefits of the ProjectGlobally, it is estimated that approximately 1.3 billion people live with some form of vision impairment, the devices available in the market for such impairments are either not readily available or too expensive for the common people to buy.
Our proposed project takes into account all the difficulties faced by visually impaired people and provides a solution that provides an effective solution for navigation and reduces the cost of such products. It is easy to use and carry. It is mainly aimed to benefit the people who are visually impaired and are not able to move much without the assistance of another person.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final device will be a blind stick with a camera, the stick will house the single-board computer, battery, and Arduino in a small box. The ultrasonic and water sensors will also be attached to the stick and a camera will be attached either to the user's shirt or the top of the stick according to the preference of the user. A band with vibrators will be attached to the stick handle which the user will connect to his hand or grab onto them so he can get vibratory feedback from the sensors. Bluetooth headset will be used to provide audio feedback from the single board computer.
