Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryOur proposed project serves the purpose of a hand for an amputee assisting him/her in daily life’s chores. The field of prosthetics is evolving and advancing day by day helping people around the world to participate in life even after their inabilities. We here, are focused on making the life of one-armed easy by developing a prosthetic arm. Although, there are many prosthetic arms internationally available in commercial market but they are very expensive and their market in Pakistan is next to none.
Project ObjectivesWe aim to replicate the motion of a hand as much as possible to help the differently abled. We have studied many techniques of making a prosthetic arm and have finalized the one that works on sensors (EMG), controllers, motors (servo) and other minor components. The arm we are making will be 3D printed which will reduce its cost as compared to the commercial arms. It will also include some predefined functions to perform specific tasks such as shoe lacing, holding a pencil, archery etc.
Project Implementation Method- 3D designing
A 3D design of the prosthetic arm’s structure will be made using Solidworks that allows us to not only make a design but to do several analysis on design’s feasibility.
- Circuit designing and simulation
Circuit will be designed and simulated using softwares such as multisim and proteus. Moreover, its PCB design will also be made.
- Coding
A code will be developed after the logic building. We have decided to firstly develop a C language code for arduino and then move towards assembly language for a controller.
- Fabrication
Fabrication involves the printing of our 3D design and PCB making as well.
- Integration and testing
Lastly all the printed parts, motors, controller and other components will be assembled and integrated together and final tests will be performed to check the working and efficiency of hand.
Benefits of the ProjectThe goal is to develop a prosthesis which can benefit people with missing arm. The device must be useful for the amputee giving them as much control, ease and comfort as possible. Moreover, modern commercially available prosthetic arms cost between $20,000 and $40,000. The cost our proposed design and arm is under $500 making it affordable.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableWe aim to achieve to achieve the following technical possibilities,
1. Targeted cost: less than $500
2. Weight of arm: 1000g
3. Lifting weight: 5kg
4. Degree of Freedom: at least 6
5. Finger actuation speed: at least 25 degrees per second
6. Palm rotation: 180 degrees approximately
7. The ratio of number of actuator to number of joint should as low as possible.
8. Feedback system in order to apply the required pressure
