MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SB-DATALOGGER USING MODULAR APPROACH WITH PREDICTION ABILITY
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryProject Summary:
The air quality of Lahore, Pakistan becomes really low due to smog in winters. One of the main reasons contributing to this smog is steel mills in Lahore. No board is available in the market which measures Methane, Butane, LPG, smoke, Alcohol, Ethanol, CNG Gas, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Gas, flammable gasses, NH3, NOx, Alcohol, and Benzene at once. The data loggers available on the market are distinct for each gas, and may occasionally detect two or three gases. With the government of Pakistan initiating several efforts to address the smog problem, many people have begun to study in order to contribute to society by proposing numerous ideas. Sensor-derived data is used by researchers to acquire information about a wide range of human behaviour and environmental factors. While commercially available data-logging sensors may be used for a variety of measures, there have been few resources dedicated to integrated hardware, software, and analytic systems aimed at field researcher use cases. The idea is to build a board that can help collect all data with real-time GPS coordinates so to help collect necessary data for research purposes. The board will also predict future trends based on historical data. Our board can easily be mounted on the buses and Orange Train. The board will record the data for at least 7 days and then provide future trends based on it. This board will collect the necessary data to support future research and train algorithms.
Research Objectives:
- To think of a solution to detect all changes in the number of gas particles in the air of Pakistan
- To build an effective prototype that will also predict future trends based on past values
- To contribute to society and help companies to identify the changes in the concentration of gases and air quality.
Academic Objectives:
- To work on the analytical and design skills to solve the conflicting requirements
Commercial Objectives:
- To help companies to identify the changes in the concentration of gases and air quality
The prototype will consist of a lot of sensors and can be used on any payload i.e., drone so it will be lightweight.
Some drones have a USB power supply. Other small electronic boards, usually have a way of taking a lithium polymer battery. 2S is most common.
Each sensor draws almost 100mA to 150 mA. We can get the ratings of each sensor from the datasheet and then add them. We will get the total load current/amp draw. We can put a 5volt regulator for safety so that the client can provide the input between 12volt to 5 volts. For live connection purposes, a GSM module will be integrated with the prototype.
Following is the general block diagram of our proposed system:

Benefits:
- an effective prototype that will also predict future trends based on past values
- will help companies identify the changes in the concentration of gases and air quality.
- Improvement in our analytical and design skills to solve the conflicting requirements
- The project will contribute to the research community and society by collecting and providing heaps of well-organized data
- when applied to the vehicles, will alert users in case of CO or CO2 reaches pasts the threshold, will beep and tell users to evacuate hence preventing suffocation of people in the vehicles
The key benefactors of our research are the future researchers, the public, smog control authorities, oil and gas industries, and steel mills.
The research’s outputs will be provided on the website so that anyone can have access to it and use it for research and awareness purposes.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final deliverables are as follows:
1. The board:
- a full-time data logging to some format that can be digested by a software application.
- All channels will log time, location, and intensity (except GPS where the intensity will not be needed)
- Removable storage (microSD) for sensor-data storage
- and on and recording light as many sensors have a warm-up time, so there will be a timer on the board that indicates when the board is warming up.
- Real-time alert so users of the board can see a strobe flash and hear a loud beep if any thresholds are detected.
- Real-time alerts will send a msg or call if any thresholds are detected. Oxygen too low or H2S too high, etc.
- Lithium battery to power up the board DC 5V @ 3A
- 7 Hertz 1 measurement per second resolution
- Datalogging of sensors with time and GPS tag.
- Refresh Rate: Programmable 0.1Hz to 10Hz
- Programmable alert thresholds
- Data Storage Format: MySQL DB
- Data Storage/Alerts/Logs: eMMC, SD Card, Cloud/Mavlink
- Activity Indicators: 3 LEDs (Power, Recording, Status)
- Buzzer for Alert Indication
2. The excel file generated by the board will sensor values

3. The prediction graph

4. Google Earth plotted values
