Project Summary

Increase in energy demands requires more transmission capacity or more reliable options for transmission and due to recent developments HVDC transmission is getting more and more attention which seems right to do the job and the most significant part of HVDC transmission is converters. Converters using IGBT-power devices are getting increased importance in order to meet the global needs for reliable and environment friendly power supply and distribution. In this project, significant efforts are to make to demonstrate the concept of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission using Modular Multilevel Converter which is a voltage source converter (VSC). These converters as compared to HVDC-transmission based on Two Level (2level) Converter and many multilevel converters are found more efficient in terms of reduced harmonics, relaibiity and redundancy.

INTRODUCTION

Demand for power is positively and highly correlated with population and economic growth therefore it is mandatory to make power supply more economical and efficient. There are several areas in electric power system where adjustments can be i.e. Power Generation, Power transmission and Load. Our area of interest will be power transmission system.

Conventionally HVAC transmission system has been used due to lack of technology. HVDC transmission systems are now being commissioned in various countries due to its several advantages like,

  • DC transmission needs less conductors.
  • There is no concept of Skin effect in DC transmission.
  • A DC System has a less potential stress therefore it requires less insulation.
  • No interference with communication system.
  • Corona losses are very low.
  •  Rate of price of Towers, Poles, Insulators, and conductor are low.

The MMC is one of the recent developments in the multi-cell converter family . The MMC preserves the features of cascaded converter topologies. The features of MMC have been used for a wide range of high-power applications, like medium voltage motor drives, HVDC transmission systems, multi-terminal HVDC systems, offshore wind farms, and STATCOM. Like other multilevel converters MMC also requires a complex control structure to meet several control objectives.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

The conventional two level converters in HVDC transmission system have the drawbacks like, high harmonics which are not suitable for high power applications. Bulky passive AC-filters are needed in order to suppress unwanted harmonics disturbing the AC-grid, Very high (di/dt).To reduce the harmonics and the disadvantages related to the 2-level inverter now a day’s multilevel inverter topologies are used for high power applications which have shown their potential very well but when they are compared to Modular multilevel Converters in term of Total harmonics distortion Modular multilevel Converters takes the lead. This shows that MMC are better option for high power applications.

Project Objectives

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this project is to show the greater efficiency within HVDC transmission system by using Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) as for its many advantages over the other types of converters. Our focus will be mainly on improving the harmonics distortion at the output.

Project Implementation Method

METHODOLOGY

Project operation details are as follow,

The project is going to operate just like conventional HVDC transmission system just voltage level will be different.

First the AC input supply is given to a converter circuit which will convert AC input to DC with the help of switching of a electronic components.

DC the output is going to be filtered with the help of inductor and capacitors suitable arrangement to smoothen the DC output of the converter which will be transmitted along a wire.

DC output of the converter will be given to the MMC inverter circuit through the wire will be converted into modulated sine wave by suitable switching of the IGBT's.

The Modulated multilevel sine wave is going the be applied to the load so as to show the output.

The switching of converter and inverter circuit is going to be carried out by microcontroller which is to be of high switching frequency by using pulse Width Modulation technique.

It will show its importance in medium voltage drives for industrial purpose.

It will promote clean and green energy production. 

It will support the economical benefits of HVDC power transmission over long distances as it is the upcoming future.

8. By using MMC asynchronous systems can be connected easily. 

This Project will show the importance of HVDC transmission and the role of Power Electronic converter in Electrical power system and will give support for the devepolment of new converter topologies to overcome the shortcomings of these electronic circuits.
