Project Summary

Around the world, the total number of fatal road crashes is increasing regardless of the improvement in infrastructure and transportation systems. . Reduced focus due to mental and physical fatigue due to drowsiness is a major cause of road accidents. This is more prominent in transport and shipping companies like TCS or Daewoo, whose drivers have to work round the clock to meet deadlines. Such drivers often end up driving without sleep for days to meet their deadlines, making them prone to crashing their vehicles.

Problem identification:

  • Drowsy driving is a dangerous combination of driving and sleepiness. This usually happens when a driver has not slept enough which usually happens with truck drivers as they have tight deadlines and pressure from their employers.
  • Drowsy driving causes accidents that lead to fatalities and injuries.

Project Objectives

 

We’ve proposed a device that will detect the drowsiness of the driver and alert him according to the situation and send his updates to the server.

Main objectives of our project:

  • Let’s first discuss non-intrusiveness which means that our techniques don’t limit driver’s movements due to cables for connection between sensors and the acquisition part.
  • Next, we have Real-time monitoring of the driver.
  • Then we move on to drowsiness detection which can be detected using different methods.
  • If drowsiness is detected, then an alarm will be given to the driver.
  • And finally, the updates of the driver are sent to the server.

 

Project Implementation Method

We've researched and found that there are 3 main techniques used for the problem namely:        

  • Driving Behavioral Technique.
  • Driver Behavioral Technique.
  • Driver Physiological Signals Technique.

We have chosen driver behavioral technique. Our video-based technology outperforms other technologies in terms of Accuracy and user acceptability as it is less intrusive and its ease of use. Moreover, it is less affected by external interferences and we are Building a driver portfolio to monitor his activity in real-time for a record.

The camera sensors are mounted on the dashboard from where the images of the driver’s face are captured and these are sent to the Raspberry Pi where the images are processed and then the driver’s eyes and head movement behavior is analyzed. The behavioral analysis will further be processed for the driver’s state of drowsiness and alertness. Then according to the state of drowsiness and the set criteria, the feedback system will operate. If the driver is in a critical state of drowsiness or has fallen asleep then the feedback system will be activated and the driver will be alerted to make him attentive and afterward a response will be required from the driver to deactivate the feedback system. This way we can alert the driver of his critical state and prevent an accident from happening which will protect the driver and other people from road injuries and deaths. And as this drowsiness detection system has a commercial market for transport companies, the drowsiness and fatigue data of each employed driver will be updated to the server through RPI GSM/GPRS module attached to Raspberry Pi. This drowsiness and fatigue behavioral data will then be compiled in the driver’s profile in the server’s database. The company can then view or assess each driver's profile and take further action accordingly.

Benefits of the Project

  • First of all, it is beneficial for the drivers as it monitors their sleep and wakes them up.
  • It can be beneficial for companies to monitors their drivers who are in a state of danger to warn them before something bad happens.
  • Companies like Uber and Careem can get our device and they should not worry about driver safety anymore.
  • Moreover, our aim is to make this device portable and easy to install so that everyone can be safe in their automobiles and travel safely.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Well integrate a camera with the raspberry pi and then get images from it process the images from the microcontroller and then detect the state of the driver either drowsy or awake. If drowsy then well trigger an alarm. Then send the data to the could server of the associated company and update the driver's portfolio in realtime with the location coordinates.
