Project Summary

To keep the ship and submarine at a safe depth level a depth sounding system is utilized. Generally the system consist of echo sounders which sends pulses of varying frequencies and after bouncing back the reflected pulses are received and then processed to extract the depth. This process use DAQ (Data acquisition) cards, which proves to be very costly and require a greater space footprint. The proposed solution here is based fully on microcontroller which is low cost, efficient and requires lesser space foot print. The transducer will act as a transceiver sending and receiving the pulses and the processing is carried out through a micro-controller. An alarm is also integrated with the system that becomes active upon reaching the dead level. For the comfortable user experience the whole system is controllable from a touch screen user interface, which also shows the results and graphs.

Project Objectives

Design and development of a Micro-Controller Based Echo Sounder for Shallow and Deep Water.

Design of a simplified depth sounding solution using micro-controller and analog electronics. Addition of reverberation rejection and robustness in presence of boaacoustic noise. Minimization of space footprint as well as reducing development time and cost implications to facilitate low cost access for commercial fishing and leisure applications.

Project Implementation Method

i. Development of a Suitable User interface.

ii. Controller Based Switching between the Shallow and Deep Water Depending upon the User specifications.

iii. Automated Analog Filtering Control through Microcontroller.

iv. Design and development of PCBs and an integrated system.

v. Testing in Air and Water along with Calibration.

vi. Final Testing of Calibrated System in Water.

Benefits of the Project

This project successfully implemented and examines a low cost efficient depth sounding system. A purely indigenous solution which includes Implementation of a microcontroller based solution for depth sounding. The implementation was completed successfully using microcontrollers. Building a user interface to control the transmission and reception of the sine waves of 50 kHz and 200 kHz, which was completed using a touchscreen LCD controlled by and Arduino. Moreover performing the processing using a micro-controller is a unique achievement.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project involves the following main components:

a) Using microcontroller for Control & processing An Arduino based solution is preferred for all control and processing. This solution shall include coding multiple dedicated controllers to process user input, pulse data and control system feature as well as keeping track of depth history.

b) Developing of Analog Electronics for Filtering & Amplification A significant portion of the project would involve development and integration of the filtering, pre-amplification, power amplification and TVG circuits for pulse transmission and reception.

c) Development of HMI and integrated Depth Alarm The system incorporate a touch screen graphic LCD capable of displaying depthtime plots, system controls and system diagnostics. It is able to support RGB color scheme in order to optimally discriminate between all the information to be displayed. Additionally, it integrate a dedicated alarm system that notifies the end user about the danger if the ship enters an unsafe depth. This alarm can is in the form of a buzzer as well as a notification on screen.

d) System integration & Testing The end product consist of a complete integrated including all the controllers, amplifiers, transducers and every other module as per the requirements specified. These are integrated on separate receive and transmit PCBs. To treat the system as black box, assume that the end user had only have access to the input specification, and the output in the form of display and alarm notification system. The system is tested initially in air followed by pool/tank testing to verify function.
