Merits and Future of Energy Storing Bricks

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

Energy can be stored in a variety of ways such as hydroelectric dams, rechargeable batteries that can store and release extremely high heat energy, as well as compressed air storage, flywheels, cryogenic systems.

  • But with the rapid growth of technology energy can now be stored in bricks again.

Project Objectives

ENERGY STORING BRICKS:

• Bricks are one of the oldest known building materials, dating back thousands of years. Why was brick chosen for energy storage? Because pores provide more brick area than solid materials, the porous structure of brick is suitable for storing energy, and the larger the area, the more electricity a supercapacitor material can store.

• But researchers at the University of Washington at St. Louis have discovered new uses of bricks: as energy storage units.

• A team of engineers and pharmacists have figured out a way to turn an ordinary brick into a fake battery — which allows us to run and store electricity.

Bricks are powerful enough to light an LED lamp and cost only about $ 3 to make.

Project Implementation Method

A building with brick holes is good for storing power as holes provide a larger brick area than solid material, so a large area where additional electricity will hold the supercapacitor material. Bricks are red because of the clay they are made of which contains a chemical compound, called rust, which is also needed for storage. The holes in the bricks are filled with acid vapor that dissolves the chemical element of the metal and converts it into a functional metal form that creates chemical reactions. a different gas is allowed to flow into the pits to fill with sulfur-based substances that react with the metal.

A brick battery relies on a red color known as iron oxide, or rust, which gives red bricks their color. Scientists pump bricks with several gases mixed with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibers. These tiny filaments cover empty spaces inside the bricks — and they carry electricity.

Benefits of the Project

Our project is the first to demonstrate energy storage in bricks, however other work are in progress to chemically alter bricks for other uses. The red pigment in bricks has been used as a chemical catalyst, however this requires significant processing to ensure the purity of the separated iron oxide. Metal oxide nanoparticles have also been combined both with brick and concrete to remove atmospheric pollutants. Other groups have created bricks that incorporate carbon nanomaterials to form electrodes that can conduct electricity.A building with brick holes is ideal for energy storage because the holes give the brick more space than solid material, and if the surface is too strong the superconductor can hold electricity. Super capacitors retain the electric charger, unlike batteries, which store chemical energy.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

As a Structural Unit

As clay bricks or fired bricks are strong, durable, durable, resistant to abrasion and fire, therefore, they are used as building materials in various buildings:

  • Buildings
  • Bridges
  • Foundations
  • Arches
  • Pavement (Footpath, Streets)
  • Brick Flooring
