Project Title

Manufacturing and Assembling of Banana Fiber Twisting Machine

Project Area of Specialization

Mechanical Engineering

Project Summary

A twisting machine belongs to the category of one of the most common textile machinery that twists many single fibers into a single strand. Its function is to process yarn or yarn products after merging into a linear product for weaving and knitting.

Natural fibers are attracting the interest of engineers, researchers, professionals, and scientists all over the world as an alternative to petrochemical fibers such as polyester, Nylon, etc. Because of their superior properties such as high specific strength, low weight, low cost, fairly good mechanical properties, non-abrasive, eco-friendly, bio-degradable characteristics. Presently, with the increasing demand for sustainable fiber as raw material for textiles industries are looking at natural fibers.

The banana fruit crop is a major part of our dietary supply chain. Its fibers go to waste due to a lack of suitable sustainable technology for its commercial utilization. Banana fiber can be utilized as raw material for the industries in a range of products like paper, cardboard, tea bags, and currency notes and reinforced as polymer composite in fashionable dress materials. Banana fiber is an environmentally friendly fiber like jute fiber, and it has good mechanical properties due to its high alpha-cellulose and low lignin percentage as compared to other fibers. Currently, there is no twisting machine available in Pakistan which can handle these stiff banana fibers.

This proposal proposes the design and development of a banana fiber twisting machine. The Banana fibers, after passing through this machine will be converted into the banana yarn which is used for the manufacturing of different products like ropes, clothes, floor carpets, etc.

This machine will certainly affect the socioeconomic development of farmers and will help to improve the Textile exports of Pakistan.

Project Objectives

Following are the main objectives of our project , which are given below

1. Designing (Mathematical Calculations,3D – Modelling, and Simulation)
a.This is the first category in which we would do the calculations of different parts of the twisting machine ( shafts, pulleys, belts, bearings, and Bobin and flyers)

b.After the completion of the calculation of dimensions of the mechanical parts of the twisting machine, we will make a model of the machine in Solidworks software to get a visual image of the prototype machine.

c. In the end, after modeling of twisting machine, we simulate and analyze it through Ansys and Solidworks software.

2. Prototype Manufacturing

3. Feeding mechanism of twisting machine

4. Products trial and Machine optimization

Project Implementation Method

Our project implementation process mainly consists of four main stages.

1. Planing

2. Execution

3. Changes as per needs

4. Final Reports

PLANNING: In the first phase of the implementation, it's beneficial to establish a plan that meets the objectives of our Project. So, our team makes a proper plan in the meeting which is held in between Supervisor, Co-supervisor, and Students. Basically, we distribute our project working into 6 main steps, which are given below.

1. Calulations of dimensions of Mechanical parts

2. 3D modeling in solid edge and solid works

3. Simulation and Testing

4. Manufacturing and assembling of twisting machines.

5. Manufacturing and assembly  of feeding mechanism

6. Installing of electronics system on the machine.

EXECUTION:  Execution is our second phase of implementation we follow all the steps which we planned in the planning phase.

1. Firstly calcculate the dimensions of different mechanical parts (shafts, pulleys, belts, bearings, Bobin, flyer, and its frame)  through the mathematical equations and formulas.

Firstly, calculate the dimensions of different mechanical parts (shafts, pulleys, belts, bearings, Bobin, flyer, and its frame)  through mathematical equations and formulas.

2. After the finishing Mechanical calculations, construct a model in solid works software to get the visual image of the machine.

3. Secondly after the modeling, simulate this model in an Ansys or solid works simulation.

4. Then we will go to the manufacturing process and manufacture the calculated mechanical parts and assemble it to complete our prototype.

5. similarly we will also manufacture and assemble part B of our  Prototype machine which is the feeding mechanism.

6. In the end we would install the electronic components in the prototype for its automation

CHANGES AS NEEDED:  After installing the electronic system on banana fiber twisting we will further do some changes, according to the twist requirement of banana fiber.

FINAL REPORT:   After successful installation and work, we also write a final report in the form of a thesis report and the research journal.

Benefits of the Project

The Banana fiber project will create a lot of employment opportunities in urban and rural sectors as wealth from the waste concept. Banana fiber is eco-friendly, and biodegradable compared to all other synthetic fibers. Fiber is extracted from the leaf sheath or pseudostem of the banana plant. the use of “Banana” fiber for textile and other purposes as a natural material is a new concept for Pakistan. With the increasing environmental awareness and the growing importance of unfriendly fabrics, banana fiber has also been recognized for all its good qualities and now its application is increasing in other fields too such as apparel garments and home furnishings. However, considerable research work has been done by textile research organizations and it has been found that banana fiber can be a very promising source of natural fiber in the coming period. The mechanical property of the fiber is good compared to other fibers. Banana fiber is the best fiber with relatively good mechanical properties due to its high alpha-cellulose and low lignin percentage.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

As this project is intended to make a machine, which basically converts banana fiber into banana yarn. Further to make this whole conversion process from fiber to yarn easily, we will also design and manufacture the feeding mechanism which resulted in, less time and effort required.

When this project is completed we will easily make a banana yarn through its fiber, because still there is no such type of machine available in Pakistan that converts banana fiber into Banana yarn.
Following are the technical details of this project.
1. This machine will be able to give 4 kg banana yarn in the working of almost 12 hours.
2. This machine will require some amount of electricity ,or even this machine will also be run manually with the help of paddles.
3. The yarn which we will get from this twisting machine would be quite smooth and fine as well, and without any further use of chemicals we will   also directly use in product manufacturing
4.This machine is very easy to install and can be run esasily by every one,Because the main purpose for its easily running process is that , every farmer can understand and run this machine
