Low Power Cost Effective Smart Healthcare System with Cloud based Decision Support Mechanism for Portable Monitoring Applications
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryIncreasingly growing number of people are suffering with chronic diseases as a result of change in lifestyle. Among these, Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number 1 cause of death globally with an estimated 17.9 million lives lost each year, as reported by World Health Organization. With increasing cardiovascular diseases during the last few decades, it is important to have regular medical checkup to monitor vital signs so that the onset of disease can be detected early, and timely treatment can be given.
This project focuses on creating a cost-effective, smart, and easy to use RFID based healthcare system that can precisely measure various parameters of patients, including ECG, and transmit the information wirelessly to a cloud server for storage and processing. RFID will be used for identifying patients and registering patient's data in the cloud. A dedicated cloud app will be developed to interact with the cloud database and provide visualizations and on-demand reports for patients, their caretakers, and doctors. The same application will analyze the data and generate a notification email to the concerned doctor and/or the caretaker if the measured parameters are outside normal range.
Project Objectives• To develop a system to effectively measure ECG, Heart Rate, and temperature of a person with
reasonable accuracy.
• To develop a system that can be used for continuous monitoring, as well as for on-demand
usage.
• To develop a system that is applicable for use in clinics and homes, and convenient to operate
by the patients themselves.
• To alert the patient and generate a notification email to the concerned doctor and/or the
caretaker if the measured parameters are outside normal range.
• Cost effective, at the fraction of cost of commercially available system
• Compact and lightweight design
• Battery operated, portable equipment
• The parameters are wirelessly transmitted to a cloud server and stored on a cloud based
database where they could be retrieved and displayed via a web application.
•The parameters will be monitored via cloud based decision support system and notify users when the parameters are outside normal range
The project has two main sections.
The first section consists of sensors, computing unit, RFID, and WiFi modules and constitute the hardware portion of the project. The project work includes interfacing each sensor individually with the computing unit/system. After successfully interfacing each sensor separately, we will successively integrate them in a single design. Afterwards, RFID logic will be implemented for user identification. Furthermore, WiFi functionality will also be incorporated, through which data and RFID information will be uploaded to the cloud and associated with a particular patient.
The second section constitute the software portion and includes cloud server and database. A dedicated application will be developed to receive and store patient’s data in the cloud. The same application will be used by doctors and caretakers to visualize patient’s data. In case of emergency, the application shall send an email to doctor and/or caretaker
Benefits of the Project•Considering the lack of availability of any portable patient monitoring system that can monitor various parameters (including ECG), patients are dependent to proceed towards healthcare units which consequently consumes their valuable time and financial resources.
•Many aged, paralyzed, bed-rested and disabled patients who require continuous monitoring are compulsive to visit HealthCare units or set-up heavy and expensive machinery.
•Moreover, seeing the current pandemic scenario the patients are vulnerable to the virus which could be passed by persons in different laboratories, clinics or other healthcare units.
•Commercially available systems are difficult to operate and require manual entry of patient information.
• Low cost commercially available systems just show patient data and there is no facility to analyze data and send alerts to caretakers or doctors in case of emergency.
•Hence, to eradicate such problems there is need of cost-effective smart and easy to use health monitoring system which is easily operable and portable to get satisfactory results
