Low Head Spiral Blade Turbine
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryThe main purpose of this project is to produce a hydro turbine at very low head. It will be implemented on those areas where electricity has not reached and even if we supply them with electricity the cost to deliver will be so much high and govt. will have to bear that loss.
Project ObjectivesThe purpose of this project is to design and develop a low head hydro turbine for far flung villagers and dwellers for electricity production. As This type of turbine could be an economical source of power generation where electric power could not be provided due to absence of power transmission lines and requires huge investments on infrastructure (Huge dams and large Power stations).

So instead of all of this why not build a small hydro turbine for them which will attend to their needs. This is exactly why we chose low head turbine because it doesn't need much cost and also it is easy to fabricate and implement.
But the question arises why choose Low head turbine?
Well following observations will help us to answer that.
- High head turbine are used in Dams and other water bodies where head is very high.
- The main aim behind choosing the low head turbine is to support non developed areas of our society where heads are Low.
- It can also be operated by rain water accumulated on roadsides.
- The project can be implemented anywhere where velocity of Water is about 1 m/s
-
To develop the integration of the power plant in the ecological environment
-
EconomicalI
-
Impact on environment is minimal
-
Easily adjustable to local energy demand
-
To open new markets related to marginal hydro potential
- We have developed the function for the spiral blade using golden spiral function and also plotted it in Microsoft Excel for an angle range of 0 to 730 degrees (i.e 0 to 4.056 ???? rev)
-
The blade function is

where a is an arbitrary scaling factor and in our case it is equal to 0.8
The Excel plot for blade function is

- As we are using the Golden ratio function to make a continuously increasing spiral blade
- We started our calculations by assuming the value of velocity equals to 1 m/s and 600 RPM
- Using the golden ratio spiral function we came to the point that outer most radius is equal to 0.39 m
- As we know,
????=???? ????=???? (2 ???? ????)/60U=r ?=r (2 ? N)/60
- Putting values, we get;
????= 24.5 m/sU"= 24.5 m/s"
This will be the blade velocity for our case.
- For the blade angle we have used the Kaplan turbine reference angle which is 32 degree

We have to calculate the area of Spiral Blade
