In college and universities students avail transport facility on large scale as they cannot afford to use private vehicles or parents don't have time to drop them. Poor transport service frustrates student on daily basis when we talk about stop, bus location and routes finding etc. A well- maintained and persistently monitored transportation network should be established by service providers to meet all the concern of students. Currently, issues concerning the public transport sector have been largely solved with the launch of Airlift, Swvl, Carfirst, Uber and Careem, but the university problem of the bus systems is the same. Many research paper and final year projects are done on this issue but never implemented in real-time. The reason for this miserable condition is mainly the lack of funds for transportation service.

Our proposed project refers to a student-oriented app that targets optimized usage of resources. This cost-effective system will work as part of the real-time bus monitoring system as the location will be updated every moment. The aim is to reduce postponement, waiting time for students by providing them with proper time-scheduling, bus arrival time ,and driver details etc.

Through this app following functionalities can be performed:

  1. Students can know the current location of the university bus.
  2. Manager can modify the bus schedule that is store(d) in the database.
  3. A trip can be schedule from the given list of routes with its time on the user’s phone.
  4. Manager can track the activity of bus by sitting at any location using internet.
Project Objectives

The objectives of our application are as follows:

For students:

  1. To reduce the waiting time
  2. To enhance reliability
  3. To schedule a ride on reliable information

For service providers:

  1. To keep the track of buses
  2. To collaborate with drivers
  3. To update routes
Project Implementation Method

The front end of the system will be developed on JavaScript using React and React Native. The backend i.e. the server will be built using Node JS. As real time data is very large and it has no limit, there comes a database named MongoDB which is more suitable for hierarchical data storage. It is a cross platform document-oriented, classified as a NOSQL database program uses JSON like documents with schema. There will be two modes i.e. online and offline. Online tracking will be handled using GPS system while offline tracking will be handled via GSM technology. This application can help students to track bus and schedule their rides. Hence it reduces delay as they do not need to wait for bus to reach their destination. Hence efficiency of the service providers can be utilized by providing reliable information of the bus. And if there will be any change in route from manager, a notification will be generated to updated bus stop student.

Benefits of the Project

IMPACT ON SOCIETY and TECHNOLOGY

Our developed tracking system provides more economical  and user-friendly environment to  users and it can be helpful for fleet managers to enhance the efficiency by eliminating paperwork and increase the level of accuracy of the service on lower cost.

• This product will benefit all students who tend to travel on university buses. The application focuses on providing a real-time bus tracking system so that every student can easily catch his / her bus on time.

 • This app will help students to schedule their ride without any hassle, ETA for bus, speed limit, traffic condition and bus location details of booked bus can aid students to reach at their stops timely, so they don't miss out bus.

 • Managers can monitor the bus and keep an eye on drivers to check either they are following the routes properly or not, they can also change routes, add new routes depending on conditions that can increase the efficiency of service providers.

  • Any immediate notification will be generated in case of any problem such as road blockage, change in bus (i.e. bus disorder) and any mishap(accident), which can fix all the problems regarding student safety, addressing parents’ concerns.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of this project will be a mobile application for android and iOS that can run on supporting platforms and a web application that will be handled by admin/focal person. User application displays map showing the location of bus. It tells where bus is on a map and provide users with updated information at different time interval using GPS and allow them to schedule their rides. On the other hand, focal person can monitor the real time tracking of buses and they can change/update route if needed and an immediate notification will be generated and send to the students.
