Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryThe motivation for students to learn something new is rarely raised. The mostly wasteful use of devices by children is concerning for their guardians. So we developed an iOS based Augmented Reality application (R&D project) that helps interact with student’s study curriculum (including astronomy, botany and anatomy), to boost learnability and motivation.
Project ObjectivesTo help students learn complex concepts by visualizing and interacting with 3D-interactive AR models and boosting motivation and learning performance of students. To instill motivation among students, gamification factor is involved.
Project Implementation MethodThe implementation was done using Apple's ARkit 2.0. The 3D models were created using the scene builder from the Xcode (IDE), blender for editing the models, textures and lightning. The whole application was built for the iPad, hence, it was made using swift in Xcode, Apple's own programming language and IDE.
The research was carried out and quantified using the Keller's ARCS model for measuring motivation and learning performance using standard testing procedures. The increments were justified using the t-testing scores.
Currently, AR technologies are booming within the market, hence, it provides us immense benifit for learning and using these technologies. On top of that, the industry in Pakistan is lackluster of iOS engineers/developers.
The research that we've conducted has contributed to the fact that children really do get higher motivation when presented with a gamiffied study curriculum. That and AR combined makes it more immersive and interactive. And the overall learning performance also increases substantially.
- User profiling is done using Firebase.
- 3 major AR models, Astronomy, Botany and Anatomy. Astronomy model consists of solar system where planets can be seen revolving around the Sun. It includes movement mechanics as well i.e.one can go around the objects(planets) and can see the backside of the object as well. Botany and anatomy includes 5-6 static 3D AR models which can be rotated and zoomed.
- 2 AR based and one mcq based quizzes were implemented. Astronomy Quiz requires the user to find the specified planet in the space around him and tap on the correct one and score is calculated accordingly. Anatomy Quiz involves a gamification factor in which user is required to shoot the correct model and score is calculated accordingly.
- Leaderboard is implemented which shows all the user scores and the time they spend on application.
