Project Summary

With an ever-evolving technology and constant process of automation taking place, things have now been digitalized to the extent that almost every task that a human requires to be done has technological involvement in some or the other way. Knowing that smartphones with augmented and virtual reality are the most used technological devices nowadays, we fixated our goal towards bringing a product that provides a greater value to its users and inculcates the best features, robust functionality and an intriguing interface, right into their hands.

We have developed a software mobile application named Kindergarten Learning School which targets the basic level education requirements. The target audience for our application are the toddlers, children meeting the age limit of 2 to 6 years. This application has been intended to facilitate children in developing basic knowledge about numbers, alphabets, animals, flowers, colors, shapes, vegetables and fruits. It helps them differentiate between the similar objects and identify them by their names. Furthermore, it is extremely helpful for young fellows with speech disorders. The application encourages children to memorize basic words, pronounce them, identify common objects, and learn about new things. After the children develop some understanding about the common objects, they can play quiz and choose the best answers to test their overall learning. Parents and caretakers can monitor a child’s daily learning by checking the built-in progress report that calculates their progress by analyzing the input and selection made by them in the quiz section.

The application has a user-friendly interface with a minimalist design and interactive buttons. Since the application is envisioned to be used by toddlers, hence the UI is kept relatively simple. The navigation and usage of the application is easy to comprehend and gives a delightful and enjoyable experience.

Talking about the competitors, we have a huge competitor base. What makes our application unique is the speech recognition plugin that we have integrated to cater to the requirement of making our application usable and a learning medium for children with speech disorder. Along with this, an extensive research was also conducted regarding every minor feature and functionality to bring this project into existence and make it valuable and a must-have application.

Needless to say, this project incorporates the prime features within itself that prove to be beneficial and of a great value to the parents and children likewise and serves the main goal of its creation: to help children learn and develop speaking ability and provide parents with the ease of training their young minds and facilitate them in their learning process. Our application is not ad-free, but we have made sure to also provide an ad-free application to those users who put up a request for that.

Project Objectives

The prime aim and objective for this project is to promote learning and encourage children with speech disability to acquire basic knowledge to help them get started with a normal healthy lifestyle. For this purpose, we focused on doing a thorough research on the method and techniques that can be used to train young minds and track their day to day progress by means of conducting a quiz.

Project Implementation Method

The whole application has been developed using the UI engine of Unity3D and C# programming language. The text that follows explain a deeper understanding of these components.

The UI engine of Unity3d consists of many vital and useful elements such as buttons, images, canvas, audio, video, sprites and other 3rd party plugins . We have used these components to design different user interfaces which are further connected to each other to create a navigational structure.

The main interface of our application consists of multiple buttons such as Start Learning, Look and Choose, Quiz Game, Video Songs and Progress Report. All these buttons are within the menu which were further connected to different canvases.

The essential component of this application is the speech recognition plugin that assesses the voice input given by the user and manipulates it to produce results. An active internet connection is required to use this plugin. Within this, we created several string variables to store the words that are used within the application. When the user speaks a word, the software matches the input with the stored data. If the words match, the answer is declared to be correct, else it is indicated to be wrong.

The application uses local database within the user’s mobile device where the application is stored. This supports in generating the progress report of the individual child and helps parents and caretakers track the progress.

Benefits of the Project

 The application proves to be a good source of primary education for children with speaking disabilities and other children in general.

It fulfilled the purpose of its development, that is, to encourage children use informational applications and learn by its use. It also proves to constructive in helping young ones suffering from speech disorders.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

During the requirement elicitation phase, we had a firm thought to include a speech recognition system to manipulate the voice input provided by the user and generates appropriate result, but we were not so sure about the technology or technique to use for this feature.

Upon thorough research and analysis of the problem, along the possible software we use, we decided to opt for Unity3D framework and C# as the programming language.

We have used a plugin for Speech Recognition to address the issue of speech disorder. This is the main feature of our application makes it more open to use for all types of users, even the ones with speaking disorders.

For storing the data and information, we used local database of the device to provide the user with accurate and fast results of the quiz game and the progress report generated after providing day to day input.

The concept of our project has the potential to be enhanced further and is capable of productive discussion. 

Further more if we use AR/VR technology within this project which will be very helpful and beneficial also in the learning process.
