Surveillance is a very wearisome and mundane job. Hence, AI is the new way to analyze the video in real-time and identify abnormalities like violence or theft. Rather than humans watching over feeds, which is a time-consuming job, technology can monitor surveillance footage for abnormal activities. The advancements in AI and research for its applications in surveillance has grown to an extent where it is now promising. Nowadays, CCTV cameras have been placed all over for surveillance and security, but these are usually passive, as most of these are referred to when a crime has already been committed, and very few are real-time monitoring where these can help prevent a crime.
The smart surveillance system concept represents an enthralling platform for integration of different algorithms. It offers a system to automate and remotely monitor the environment to create more effective systems that can significantly improve the quality of life. The emerging technology enabled with the Internet of Things (IoT) model is crucial and serves as a basis to develop and implement smart surveillance systems. Integrated sub-systems, network of sensors, human interfaces, and data analytics play a key role in the development phase. The services provided by smart IoT devices are important for the progress and development of smart systems. This project will develop a smart surveillance system and propose a strategy for implementing the model. Smart surveillance is the idea where technology is used to monitor and improve the life of citizens by providing a safer environment. With the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), equipment & technologies, we have enabled ourselves to make various features more accessible & applicable.
Project ObjectivesThe end result expected for the project is a functional prototype for the monitoring of the objects in the system, along with an application for the system. It is aimed to resolve the surveillance issues by using IoT and AI technologies. The smart surveillance includes a strategy for monitoring along with techniques for detection of individual objects and dynamic management. In surveillance, it is important that the system reaches a state where it is effective and appeal to people for reliability.
Technology has helped us in improving the various aspect of our life & world. Everything in this world is evolving over time. New inventions and innovations are helping humans in a different way to uplift the standards of their lives. Hence, it is also required to create a network that improves the living standards of society. Finding solutions, with engineering and technological advancement, to problems is a way to contribute to the society. The smart surveillance system is an idea in which we use the Internet of Things (IoT), along with AI, to monitor the system more efficiently.
Project Implementation MethodIn this project we will be resolving the passive surveillance issues of the existing system. The main goal of smart surveillance is to provide efficient service to people. The idea integrates cameras in existing infrastructure to effectively monitor the system. Another important objective of smart surveillance is to efficiently manage the high ratio of crime in large and small cities. The project also deals with the management of surveillance systems and proposes a new model for surveillance that is dynamic.
The project focuses on the surveillance system and proposes a dynamic model for surveillance. Although such services exist to some extinct, they have not scaled to entertain the mass population. These also have limited capability. The limited facilitation and resources of these services restrict these from replacing the existing system, hence the proposed system incorporates into the existing system to make it more efficient also reducing the overall implementation cost. The system brings a new perspective that is feasible and only requires few modifications in the existing system to increase its efficiency.
Benefits of the ProjectSurveillance cameras or CCTV cameras are perceived as digital eyes, watching over us or watching out for us, which depends on our own point of views and intentions. But sometimes they are regarded as portholes, which is true to the great extend as they are really only useful when someone is looking through these so-called portholes. Often times this would mean that a person would be watching live footages, usually from multiple camera feeds. This also indicates that most surveillance cameras are passive. Most often this act as an obstruction, or to provide proof or evidence if sometimes goes wrong. E.g., if someone’s car gets stolen. The suggestion: check the CCTV. The idea for the project aroused from the fact that CCTV surveillance is usually a passive surveillance in most organizations. In this project we will be resolving the passive surveillance issues of the existing system. The main goal of smart surveillance is to provide efficient service to people.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe Technical details of the final deliverables are summarized in the following modules.
• Graphical User Interface
Designing the User Interface for the system to make it usable for non-technical people, without any knowledge of coding or machine learning.
• Camera Interfacing
Interfacing several cameras into the system giving eyes to the system. The IoT cameras monitor the surrounding and the data is fed into the sytem.
• Object Detection, Tracking and Ledging
The data obtained from the cameras are fed into the machine learning model for the detection of humans and other desired objects. The system is improved to track and maintain a record of the detected objects.
• Blockchain for Resilience
Blockchain helps built a resilient system. We implemented this on a blockchain, hence it guarantees resilience from information manipulation, misuse, and fabrication.
• Automated Surveillance
The integration of the system and completion of the prototying. The system is expected to detect anomalies in the area such as violence, theft, fire, etc.
