Implementation of an automatic medication dispenser specifically for users who take medications
without close professional supervision. By relieving the users from the error-prone tasks of interpreting
medication directions and administrating medications accordingly, the device can improve rigor in
compliance and prevent serious medication errors. By taking advantage of scheduling flexibility
provided by medication directions, the device makes the user’s medication schedule easy to adhere
and tolerant to tardiness whenever possible.
? To implement a user-friendly device that operates as follows: When the real-time clock
reaches the predetermined medication time and after the user authenticates his identity by
voice-recognition or fingerprint or by entering any password the predetermined medication is
dispensed from the medication dispensing tray.
? To generate an alert to the caretaker regarding the medication time.
? To determine whether the medicine has been consumed or not.
? To update the caretaker about the consumption of medicines by the patient.
? To display a message on the LCD as the patient consumes the medicines.
? To generate an alert to refill the containers when they get empty.
There are multiple options available in order to implement this design and it requires a comparative study so that desired objectives (efficiency, usability, cost-effectiveness etc.) are achieved. Implementation can be achieved using state-of-the-art methodologies like embedded system design using microcontrollers or FPGAs and sensors. A proper display and keypad must be incorporated in the design as user interface. Finger-print or voice recognition module and its implementation will be required. Alternative authorization mechanism like pin code must also be deployed. Communication module (like WIFI or GSM module) must also be implemented to send the notifications to the care-givers and multiple messages could be sent using settings. An embodiment of the device must be designed with the required mechanical parts to dispense the cartridges and the mechanism to re-fill.
A configurable, easy-to-use, efficient, cost-friendly IOT based smart medicine dispenser which will
dispense the medicines on time. The patient will interact with the device through a screen that
displays the currently scheduled dosage for the prescription medicines. The patient will use a fingerprint recognition or pin code or voice recognition system to dispense the pills for that time of the day.
As soon as the pills will be dispensed, the caregiver will be notified that the dosage is taken. If a
significant period of time has lapsed (this period is configurable through settings) the dosage is not
taken, a warning notification would be issued to the care-giver regarding it on his/her app.
We would be having three containers for morning, mid-day and night dosage for the patient these
casing displaying whether the door is locked or unlocked.
Instead of making seven containers for each day, for the above mentioned three slots for, which
medicines are prescribed to be consumed, we will be making three containers for these slots and
they will contain the medicine for the entire week. This would result in lower hardware cost (also as
containers are made-up of plastic mostly we would be reducing plastic consumption as well) as well
as simplifying our product design.
As soon as the person verifies one’s identity, he/she would be granted access to any of the
containers that contain the medicine, through the actuator. The container would contain bags, each
bag consisting of dosage of one time. The user is expected to manually pick one bag out of that
container and lock the door of the dispenser. This would generate an alert for the caretaker and the
dispenser’s display will be updated that the prescribed medicine has been consumed.
