Project Summary

Agriculture being one of the major contributors to the Pakistan’s GDP is still dependent on ancient methods of irrigation. As irrigation system is the back bone of agriculture, so it needs to be improved to yield high quality crops and also to increase production quantity. Smart irrigation system using a self-command and control system through wireless sensor network can be a handy solution to various agriculture problems like water theft, over watering, uneven distribution of water. Cloud based Wireless sensor network using various  sensors , IOT based system incorporated with embedded system forms a smart irrigation system. The various end nodes acquires/ collect moisture data from field. A huge amount Data collected from millions of end node is sent to command and control system. The system will make decisions on the basis of data computed and will send control signals to various motors to control water level. And decreased level indicated between nodes will be referred by as theft by Control and Command center

Project Objectives

To design a IOT based irrigation system which adresses the three problems 1) overwatering of a field 2) A timer based water distribution system 3) water theft indication and monitering system.

As overwatering of a field wastes a lot of water so it is required to water the field accorrding to the requirement of the crop on that particular field. By using soil moisture sensors a system is developed that will indicate a the amount of water being delivered that as different fields have different water requirements so soil mositure sensors will indicate water ducts to close even before the allocated time to that field if the necessary water to field is delivered at that time.  By using timer based motorized water duct gates on water channels the scheduled and even distribution of water is ensured.

The theft can be controlled by monitering  level of water in channels are by using ultrasonic sensors. Any decrease in water level will be indicated as theft along with the approximate location of leakage.Smart system will not only control the level of water but also send the data measurements to Command and Control  center. As various nodes are installed on canal so the at any instant the decreased level of water will indicated the water theft or damaged canal point with more accuracy.

Project Implementation Method

The aim is to develop a Monitoring and control unit for a complex wireless sensor network using  Ultrasonic and Moisture sensors.  Servo motors being able to rotate at 90 degree provides and excellent solution for water duct valves.  Valve which is used to close or to open the flow of fluid through the water outlet. By using a timer based water servo motors network the even distutribution of water is ensured.  All the data acquired current and previous state of water inlet outlets will be transmitted by using a  aurdino wifi shield through an ethernet. A wireless sensor network will be employed for data measurement and transmission. A wireless sensor network is a self configuration network the connect various nodes that only communicate with each other and to control room through a gateway.A web application is developed so the user can monitor the measurements, note the open/close states of water outlets, can monitor the point from where the canal is damaged or water is being theft. The user GU interface will be designed by using MAX(measurement and automation explorer) a tool in LabView is more suitable as it helps to publish a webpage.

The iot based smart  irrigation system is designed to optimize the production per unit of available water, ensuring equitable distribution between canals, branches and also among the outlets to reduce the amount of water wasted in irrigation, and to decrease the economic cost for the users. So it becomes difficult task for farmers to maintain the whole procedure. In our project an electronic device is responsible for sensing moisture conditions thast indicate about the moisture in fields like soil moisture sensor. Using this approach it can be shown that farmers are diversifying their income at the expense of agricultural activities.this project can b help to irrigation department to safe the water.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our system ia IoT based irrigation syatem in which we can use sensors diffrent on canals thats can measure the level of water of canal, we used ultrasonic sensors for measuring the level of water. we can also used soil moisture sensors in field for detecting the moisture in the field. our system is much easly to understand. IoT based irrigation system in which we can use servo motors for controlling the gates in the canal.
