Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryA high percentage of electricity is lost to power theft because old meters have no method to detect and remove the fault while smart meter not only detect the theft but also alarm the user or remove fault from system. As a future work, this project will be extended to three phase version then it will available for industries also. In industries power factor maintaining is a big challenge, so by using three phase real time energy analyzer meter they can keep monitor power factor in real time.
Project ObjectivesWith the advancement of technology, objective is not just giving the meter readings but it changing and increasing day by day with the increase in energy sector. Some objectives are discussed below:
Measurement of Energy.Obviously basic purpose of energy meter is to measure energy unit and electric company collects it directly without error and also there will be no need of men for meter reading.
Theft Detection:
One of our objectives is to detect theft by using relay. Actually in coding we set the limits if current exceed from limits means there is theft or fault then relay operate and shutdown the system.
Project Implementation MethodSoftware implimentation:
A wide variety of software is available in market that can be used to for this specific project. Proteus, Simulink, Arduino, Autodesk Eagleand PSpice are amongst the many.
Proteus in particular is being used as a simulation tool. It provides us a basic platform for initial testing of the hardware that is being implemented. Logical coding for microcontroller is done using Arduino. Voltage and Current waveforms are made compatible to the microcontroller and fed to microcontroller for Current RMS, Voltage RMS, Power Factor, Real and Reactive Power and Temperature calculation. Autodesk Eagle is a 16 signal layer PCB support software for pushing PCB designing to its limits. Autodesk Eagle is used to design PCB of our project.

smart meter is so much secure, exact calculation, user friendly and electricity theft can be detected. The billing process can be made easier, it show real time load curve and energy consumption details to customers which help to understand the behavior of load and reduce energy losses. Also data will be stored in database, user can excess to it at any time. By using the past data we can do future load forecasting and reduce the unnecessary blackouts
