Project Summary

The overhead power lines are easy to detect the faults, as fault is seeming clear, e.g., when tree falls on the line, any pole is damaged and conductors impaired to ground.

The location of faults is usually done by circuit detaching or de-energized. Sometimes, circuit is under power. There are different techniques to detect fault, like terminal methods, using current and voltage measurement at the end of cables, also by tracer method.  This work on inspection on the length of cable. Terminal method locate the general faults in prescribed area along a long cable.  In general wiring system, fault is located by inspection of wires. The wires are hidden in complex wiring systems (e. g, aircraft wiring), A Time-domain reflectometer used for location of faults. The reflectometer work is to send pulse to the wire and a pulse is reflected back to identify faults in the wire.

At low voltages insulation fault is not detected easily. The high energy applies using "thumper" test set, high-voltage pulse provides the cable. Discharge at the fault produce sound, Fault is located by listening this sound. This test damage at the cable site, practically it is re insulated due to faulted location. In a distribution system with high resistance, the system operation remains continuous after a feeder develop a fault to ground. The faulted, but energized, feeder can be connected with a ring-type current transformer for collection of phase lines. For easy detection of ground fault current.

Project Implementation Method

Following method for creation of transmission line fault is

  1. Gain knowledge about different faults in transmission lines by reading research papers(Literature Review)
  2. Develop circuit diagram
  3. Software simulations
  4. Developing code
  5. Hardware structure construction
  6. Configuration of hardware with microcontroller and other electronics modules involved
  7. Using IOT for information on smart device

Benefits of the Project

The project constructed or the idea behind it can be used in immense number of ways.

  • It can be used in wapda to make it smart
  • It can be Used in transmission lines
  • Also used in distribution side

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our project based on three phase transmission lines ,for phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3. Actually we creating faults using different switches mention line 1 (switch 1) , line 2 (switch 2), line 3 (switch 3) and neutral (switch 4). When two switches are in closed situation the fault is occur the fault may be in line to line or in line to ground, the whole system disturbed and then CTs sense  the access current and send signal to controller now controller is in working condition isolate the AC power from the lines, now microcontroller send  signal to DC power supply to run, and provide heavy DC current 60 A/ 5 v to the transmission lines , DC relays are connected with DC Power supply, to handle the dc current in transmission lines, this give signal to microcontroller for faults detection.
