Project Summary

Drowsiness or microsleep is a feeling of being sleepy and tiredness that is quite dangerous when considering it during driving. As the driver is tired and unable to drive properly, several accidents can take place throughout the world that can threaten the life of driver and others. Furthermore, the damage to the vehicle can also take place. Several deaths and the injuries occurred due to the drowsy driving. To avoid these types of the accidents we are going to develop an embedded system with different sensors like Inertial Measuring unit (IMU) sensor and Global Position System (GPS) module for the drowsiness detection. Two cameras will be used one for detecting the face of the driver and the other camera will be used for capturing the status of the path on which the car is moving. We are going to develop this system by using image processing and Internet of Things (IoT) based data transmission of driver live images, car’s speed, location, and position. As a result of the drowsiness detection alarm will be triggered.

Project Objectives

The objects of the project are as follows.

1. Design and development of drowsiness detection system by using image processing.

2. Design and development of an embedded system for IoT-based data transmission of driver live images and car’s speed, location, and position. Driver alarm system in case of emergency.

Project Implementation Method

Our project is IOT based Drowsiness detector that will watch the status of the driver whether he is awake or is sleeping with the help of a camera by using image detection. We will implement the deep learning algorithm. If the driver is found in drowsy condition, then an alarm will be triggered to make the driver awake. IMU and GPS Module will also perform their tasks.

Its purpose is to reduce the accidents that are increasing day by day. Drivers during long journeys fall asleep, and it results in fatal accident-causing damage to precious lives of the people. So, after seeing these conditions with the suggestion of our supervisor we decided to design a system that will prevent the drivers from sleeping and will reduce the intensity of the accident. So, this was the reason for selecting this project.

The components that we will use in this project are an Nvidia Jetson nano microcontroller, Raspberry PI camera module, minicomputer, IMU sensors, and GPS Module. The purpose of the two cameras is that one camera will be used to detect the face of the driver to check its drowsiness and the other camera will be used for capturing the status of the path on which the car is moving. Moreover, GPS will also be used to keep the updated location of the driver and send it to the owner of the vehicle.

1) To ensure the safety of drivers life and life of the other people as well

2) To improve quality of transport.

3) To ensure the safety of the public properties.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our end system will be a type of protable device having two cameras, different types of sensors and a micrcontroller. Final product will be be able to detect the drowsiness of the driver and will be able to take certain action on emergency situation. Moreover there will be sensors performing different tasks. Gps modeule will provide the information about the location of the driver to the owner of the vehicle.

We will detect the face of the driver by using Image processing. For this purpose we will use deep learning in which we will make our system learn. Mode of communication that will used is Iot(Internet of Things)
