In this era of innovation and utility, the main purpose of any meaningful research should be to provide ease and comfort to mankind in general. The recent developments in the field of computing are meant to achieve the same goal. The extensive transportation network spread all across Pakistan means that a very large degree of national logistics is dependent on road travel. The cities in Pakistan are situated at very long distances from each other. Commuters traveling on the roads have to travel several hundred or even thousands of miles on a frequent basis. These commuters include both heavy-duty drivers deployed by logistics companies and common travelers. Fatigue and loss of vigilance amongst the drivers are a very common problem. Recent developments in the computer hardware and software industry have provided many values added services to the society which have vast potential to help such drivers. One such potential area is that of intelligent vehicles and driver support systems, which can greatly enhance the safety of drivers and passengers by alerting the drivers to dangerous situations. The intelligent vehicles not only recognize the situation, but also the driver’s intended actions. Statistics reveal that a leading cause for fatal or injury-causing traffic accidents is due to drivers with a diminished vigilance level and fatigue. Drivers with a diminished vigilance level suffer from a marked decline in their abilities of perception, recognition, and vehicle control, and therefore pose a serious danger to their own life and other’s lives. Hence, there is an increasing need for the developments of active safety systems for the prevention of such accidents. Traffic accidents are responsible for the loss of millions of lives throughout the world, and Pakistan is no exception to this tragic trend. According to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.2 million die annually as the result of traffic accidents and each year more than 50 million are injured and disabled around the globe. In Pakistan, there are approximately 7,100 road fatalities every year and 38,000 seriously injured individuals, of whom 7 percent are permanently disabled. According to the General Directorate of Traffic, Pakistan has 23 deaths per 100,000 with an average of 19 road fatalities occurring daily.

Project Objectives

The goal of the project is to gather data about the effectiveness of using intelligent technologies for fatigue detection and prevention of road-related hazards. The data compiled through the execution of this system will be analyzed against other states of the art techniques and results and findings will be presented in the form of a comprehensive report.

The overall objectives of our research proposal can be broadly categorized into two areas: technical objectives and research objectives. Research objectives will be met through research reports while technical objectives will be met through the implementation of the proposed technique on experimental level for data generation and further processing. The technical objective is planned to achieve the following;

Project Implementation Method

We use digital image processing and artificial intelligence techniques to alert drivers. Using the concept of  IoT we implement a mobile app for emergency contacts such as nearest hospital, police stations, and family member.

 we are expecting to get an intelligent drivers fatigue detection and vigilance monitoring system. The results of our experimentation will be compared with state of the art methodologies in this regard. The research is expected to yield several benefits to Pakistan in particular and scientific community in general. Major results and outcomes of this research are as follows:

  1. Development of technique and resultant prototype solution for fatigue and vigilance monitoring
  2. The analysis and validation of results to demonstrate the effectiveness and utilization of system on smartphones.
