Project Summary

In this experimental based project we are trying to solve two major problems, one is water, and other is electricity, as Pakistan is underdeveloped country majority of its population belongs to middle class and lower middle class standard water and electricity are their basic needs and rights, but many of them are not getting their basic needs and rights.

Water can be generated through technology of Peltier effect, Desalination, Air well (condenser), Dew pond, Fog collection, Rainwater harvesting, Solar chimney, Water maker, Solar still, Metal–organic framework § Water vapor capture, Water scarcity, the technology we are using is Peltier effect because is cost effective as compare to others.

As now a days the world is shifting towards the renewable energy, the main reason of this transformation is the green/clean environment, as till now the electricity were produced from conventional methods  like burning coal and other fuels to run the turbines so that electricity produced there are many other ways to produce electricity like nuclear, biomass, natural gas, oil, geothermal etc. but these methods are very costly and are not environmental free, very high operational cost, Now a days there this high scope of renewable energy, there is no operational cost for producing electricity, and very low maintenance cost. Our area of interest is to build the Micro VAWT (vertical axis wind turbine), as energy is the right of every individual, but every individual is not getting his/her right economically.

Project Objectives

  • To learn the all the technical aspects of wind turbine.
  • To provide water to overcome the shortage of water.
  • To learn about different technologies of atmospheric water generator.
  • To learn the energy policies of nation.
  • To provide the environmentally friendly source of electricity.
  • To fulfill the basic need of humans at reasonable/zero cost.

Project Implementation Method

In methodology we are focusing on different products like,

  1. Micro VAWT (vertical axis wind turbine),
  2. Electric Generator,
  3. Atmospheric water generator,
  4. Storage device/battery,

Micro VAWT (vertical axis wind turbine):

According to our study Micro VAWT most eligible turbine to be installed for residential as well as commercial use. It will be easy to install and can fulfill the demand of electricity 1kw to 2kw easily. The main reason to choose this design is its starting wind speed it can start rotating at the initial wind speed of 3m/s, and the direction of wind does not matter in this design because VAWT spins in its own axis, VAWT consists of 3 blades at angle of 120º,

Electric Generator:

The electric generator uses to produce electricity is not conventional type dynamo, it is basically axial flux PMA (permanent magnet alternator) An axial flux permanent magnet machine, designed to operate as a generator in a small-scale wind-power application. The machine is realized by using consecrated stator winding with open slots and surface mounted permanent magnets on rotor disk. according to our study it’s the most eligible alternator which can be integrated with VAWT because in it no need of gear box to increase torque or speed.

Atmospheric water generator:

An atmospheric water generator (AWG) is a device that extracts water from humid ambient air, the technology we are using in this generator is Peltier effect, The concept of this project can also be used as a better alternative in refrigeration science against conventional systems. The Peltier thermoelectric device has two sides( a p-type and an n-type semiconductor), and when DC current flows through the device, it brings heat from one side to other, so that one side gets cooler while the opposite one gets hotter. This is called Peltier effect and electron hole theory. A conventional cooling system contains three fundamental parts-the evaporator, compressor and condenser. Reasons to use Peltier are that its cheaper than conventional method of refrigeration, and it has no noise during operation sound pollution will be zero with Peltier effect.

Storage device/battery:

Battery which will be used to store electricity and to supply enough power of 12V to AVG is lithium ion, which will be built with small lithium ion cells each call of 4.7V These li-ion battery advantages include: High energy density: The high energy density is one of the chief advantages of lithium ion battery technology. ... Lithium ion cells is that their rate of self-discharge is much lower than that of other rechargeable cells such as Ni-Cad and NiMH.

In this project we will create our own Axial flux PMA, and AWG, the technical details are still in progress.
