Infrared Thermography for Inspection of Electronics Equipment
In this project, we use infrared thermography for detecting the heat from electric circuit’s components. Infrared thermography is the science of detecting infrared energy emitted from an object, converting it to an apparent temperature, and displaying the result as an infrared image that is captured by a thermal camera.
Thermal Anomalies in equipment are indicators of potential problems. Because this science can detect heat patterns in the infrared wave-length spectrum that are not visible to the naked eye, it can give you a big boost in identifying components that are going bad, before they fail.
Rather than providing a numerical test result as with various test meters, a thermal camera (also called a thermal imager) captures an image that you can enhance with different color palettes and highlighting tools to immediately root out a potential problem. Because you can capture infrared images without making direct contact with the equipment you can get a better picture (literally and figuratively) of the actual conditions when the equipment is under load.
Most thermal cameras also capture “radiometric” data, which means that you get an apparent temperature for each pixel within the image. When you locate an anomaly, you can quickly drill down, see the apparent temperatures of the exact points in question, and determine whether they are within the normal range.
Infrared thermography can open your eyes to a new world of data that’s always been around you, but you’ve never been aware of because you couldn’t see it without a thermal camera.
Objectives:
1. To validate the use of infrared thermography (IRT) testing to identify the potentials failure in electronic equipments.
2. To establish calibration process in order to develop the database.
3. Cost efficient or economical.
4. Design of GUI for real time data presentation.
5. Real time data logging
For implementing this project, we cover all the literature study for the project, which will, goes through the whole project implementing time. After that, we purchased the hardware components for project. For mechanical design, we made a 3D design and then purchased a wood for implementing the mechanical design of the project. During this time, we continue the software side of the project, which include applying of different algorithms on the image through coding for a clear image. In addition, in last we spent time on testing and mechanical presentation of the project.
Some of the benefits of this project are as under:
Detection:
It helps in detecting hot spots of circuits and other potential problems in energized electrical components. It allows to immediately see what's wrong in electric circuit components.
Accuracy:
Accuracy in images of circuit components in the main benefit of this project as the accuracy of the sensor we used is +-2%. After implementing different algorithms on the image, it is more clear and accurate resultant image.
Cost:
The main objective and benefits of this project is to be efficient. As the thermal imaging, cameras are very expensive to afford so we have to make it cost efficient.
Data storage:
The resultant image is saved in an SD card in the raspberry pi. Therefore, any time you can access the previous images.
It also shows the real time data display so that we can inspect the circuit components.
In this project, we use IR sensor (AMG8833) which works on the principle that it detect incoming heat radiations and convert it into pixels. As these pixels are then processed by different algorithms in raspberry pi through coding. The resultant image is then saved in the SD card or in USB through raspberry pi. We have used python with opencv packages for programming of this project.
