Project Summary

This project is intended to detect the exact location of circuit fault in the underground cables from the feeder end in less than a kilometer  by using an arduino microcontroller. The arduino microcontroller works based on the output of the cable resistance. Relay helps to separate the faulty line fro m healthy line.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to determine the distance of underground cable fault from base station in kilometers using an Arduino board. The underground cable system is a common practice followed in many urban areas. While a fault occurs for some reason, at that time the repairing process related to that particular cable is difficult due to not knowing the exact location of the cable fault.

Project Implementation Method

1.Short Circuit Fault

Short circuit can be determined by measuring resistance between two cables at one end (base station).  The value of resistance tells us the exact location of short circuit.

2. Open Circuit Fault

Open Circuit can be detected by measuring the capacitance between two wires. Capacitance of cable changes according to the length. The length of cable varies based on the location of cable cut (open).   As the cable is open parallel wire capacitance gets reduced based on this we can calculate the fault location.

Benefits of the Project

  1. It will find fault in short as well as open wires and fault distance will be precised to meters.
  2. If fault occurs it will notify through message (gsm) as well as will locate fault on map using gps ,will be beneficial for smart cities.
  3. It will find exact location of fault from base station so we don't need to dig the whole underground cable.
  4. Can detect 3 wires at a time or can be extended to n wires.
  5. Repairing process is easy.
  6. Low maintenance of project
  7. Improved public safety.
  8. Less consumption of power
  9. Easy to handle, Less complexity

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  1. Device which can be connected to 3 ends of wire.
  2. Will locate fault in short as well as in open wire in meters and it will notify through message and on map.
  3. An app which will contain map where all devices in smart city will be shown and if fault occurs devices will be indicated on map.
  4. Software model (proteus) and physical prototype of the system.
  5. Technical report of the project.
