The domain of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) had received a lot of attention recently due to its significant advanced capabilities in the ocean surveillance, marine monitoring and application deployment for detecting underwater targets. There are three main communications media that can be used in underwater applications. These are radio frequency, visible light, and acoustic wave. The purpose of choosing acoustic communication over these two is acoustic waves are ideal choice for us to implement it in our project. It includes the benefits of high range and it does not effect by any interference. Especially, when we compare it with RF and VLC it gets less attenuated. We have divided our work into two main objectives. Firstly, we will get to know about the simulation and plotting nodes using MATLAB software. After successful completion of simulation, we will further deploy that network physically, for that we will use (a) Ultrasonic Transceiver for communication. (b) Arduino as a microcontroller and using one of the modulation schemes for Acoustic communication.

Project Implementation Method

The method of implementing the project works as per objectives declared. To achieve the first objective, we need to design a sensor node on a stimulating environment then we will apply the communication algorithm to it once that is successful communication is established between the nodes then we will move towards the second objective of this project which is hardware development. Sensors will be deployed in an underwater environment where these sensors will read the parameter which depends on the sensors we are using for instant temperature and update to its neighbor node if it displays the results then an underwater acoustic sensor network and will apply the required communication algorithm if the successful communication is established which means that the declared objectives are achieved if not then we need to find/discover new algorithm which works.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of this project includes many but some of them are discussed here. Mines as we can use sensors underwater the water that can sense some hidden mines which is not possible by the human to detect, sea area surveillance because UWSNs are also used for surveillance purposes where the intrusion of any undesired entity is detected. This can be used for near- and offshore surveillance purposes. Assisted navigation as underwater environment is extremely uneven, unexplored, random, and dark with increasing depth. In such environment there is need of assistance for navigating the vessels, boats, ships, and even swimmer and explorers. The project can also be implemented in water based sports for finding out the location of the swimmers, prediction of upcoming disasters like floods, tsunamis, can be used for oil and gas exploration.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverables of this project will be achieved as the milestones achieve. Once the literature review is completed we will become familiar with simulating environment, after simulation process we will get to know about how we can establish successful communication between two nodes, then once we have selected and design the hardware we are able to design water proof sensor nodes. After the hardware implementation of our project we are able to deploy successful sensor nodes in underwater. At last after simulating multiple nodes successful communication between multiple nodes will be established.
