High Speed Underwater Optical Communication System
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryIn this project we will be establishing an underwater optical wireless communication system to achieve high data rate, by using different modulation schemes
to achieve high data rate up to long distances underwater. Green laser as an optical source , avalanche photodiode as a detector at receiving end, a water medium tank with some mirrors inside on opposite sides to increase the distance for optical signal and some driver circuits would be used to assemble this system. Previously this type of system has achieved 100 MBPS of data rate up to 100m with NRZ-OOK modulation scheme and we will be experimenting some different modulation schemes to achieve high data rates.
Project Objectives1.To review optical communication techniques used underwater
2. To setup optical communication link for underwater communication.
3. Design final prototype of laser as transmitter and photodiode as a receiver and achieve high data rate at longer distance
Project Implementation Method-Green Light Laser source Using NRZ-OOK scheme modulation
-Transmitter AWG arbitrary waveform Generator
-Bias-Tee to convert DC current into Laser source
-Lens And Mirrors in Water tank
-APD adopter Module to convert optical signal into Electrical Signal
-Oscilloscope For acquisition and further signal processing.
At the transmitter side, a pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) is used then an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) generates the electrical signals, which are combined with a direct current (DC) via a bias-tee and injected into the Laser diode source. In such a way that the electrical signals are converted to optical signals for underwater transmission. The water tank is filled with tap water. In the experiment, the maximum communication distance is achieved by using small reflective mirrors on both sides of the tank.
At the receiver side, an APD module is used to convert the received optical signals into electrical signals and then sent to the oscilloscope (OSC) for data acquisition and further signal processing. We employ a high-sensitivity receiver in the experiment for a longer distance
Benefits of the ProjectOptical wireless source has higher bandwidth and it can support higher data rates compared to acoustic signals underwater. By using experimenting different modulation schemes we can further achieve higher data rates and can also increase the distance. This will also help in future progress of Optical wireless communications system and it is beneficial for offshore exploration and many other applications like vehicle to vehicle communication.
under water optical wireless communication system helps us to establish a communication link over 100 of meters without physical hook-up and also operable in noisy environment
