Starting of an induction motor draws a high current (approx. 7 times of normal current) due to low back EMF. High starting current causes voltage dip which affects the performance of an induction motor. Starting current can be controlled through different methods i-e star-delta conversion, voltage drop, or lowering input frequency. Here we use a cycloconverter to control the speed of motors because there is no harmonic in output and its efficiency is very good    Cycloconverter converts ac power of fixed frequency to ac power of variable frequency. the need of Cycloconverter is to control the speed of large motor like Water pumps, rolling mills, cement mill, etc., therefore, the output frequency of cycloconverter is reduced which help us to start large load with full load at minimum speed and then slowly increase the speed of the motor by increasing the output frequency.

As the speed of motors depends on the frequency and number of a pole (Ns=120f/p) so frequency can easily change than changing the pole. There are different methods to control the speed of induction motors. We use thyristors as a switching device there are two switching circuits positive and negative which are used for positive half cycle and negative half cycle and these all-logical operations are controlled through a code written in PIC18F4550 microcontroller. This contro0ller sends a pulse through an optocoupler to trigger the thyristor.

Project Implementation Method

The implementation of the project involves the following steps to achieve our objectives:

  1. Gain knowledge about the basics and working of cycloconveter.
  2. Understanding the background theory and acquire knowledge about the previously done work in similar area.
  3. Design of power supply (5V) and cycloconverter by using the software. 
  4. Design single phase step down cycloconverter using PIC18F4550.
  5. Hardware implementation of power supply .
  6. Hardware implementation of sinlge phase step down cycloconverter.
  7. Compare simulated with measured result.
  8. Accumulate all details and compose a project report.
Benefits of the Project

Induction motors are the essiential part of the Industry . Starting of the induction motor has always been the problem .Speed control of induction motor with variable frequencies i.e. f, f/2 and f/3 is one of the possible solution. We can operate large induction motors with full load at minimum speed.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final delieverables will be 

The controlled speed of the Induction motor at variable frequency with the help of the cycloconverter.
