Project Area of Specialization Software EngineeringProject SummaryIn this modern world, 3D scanning and printing are becoming more popular. This project will help us to build our own 3D handheld scanner which is low cost and easy to build. This project can do many things in 3D scanning such as Researching Archeological sites, where you can scan the whole site and develop a 3D model on a computer on which you can work on it without disturbing the actual site. It can be used in Media industries, as nowadays most of the films are made in a 3D environment, 3D models of specific places can be directly used in it with aging actors 3D scanner is used to scan them and then use different methods to make them young. It can also be used in industrial projects and reverse engineering where you can scan a specific object which can be 3D scanned which is cheaper than remaking the object. In this project, we will be using a depth camera Intel Realsense D415 which will also allow us to scan the depth of the object. Moreover, it will help us to scan texture-less objects as a normal camera cannot do this. The D415 camera has three types to capture data RGB camera, and two IR cameras. This project is now possible because of the Raspberry pi 4 as the previous version didn’t have enough RAM and power to make such a project.
Project ObjectivesTo help develop modern technology, we are making this research based project where we will be using Open-Source software; RTAB-map, Realsense to connect camera and ROS kinetic to work on it. All the software will be interlinked to create a 3D module of it. RTAB-map is the actual software used to create the 3D model which is open source and we can further work on it to improve the accuracy of the 3D model. This will help us create 3D models of wide range in which we can scan a whole room or even a house. Unlike other 3D scanners which are placed in one place. Handheld technology will allow us to scan at any place we want allowing the feasibility of movement.
Project Implementation Method· Making of Handheld cover
Making of cover which can hold the camera, pi 4 and power bank in it. So that we can easily move the camera anywhere we like.
· Establishment of software’s
Downloading of software fixing bugs to make the update on Pi 4, and interconnecting them with each other to make 3D models of it.
· Making of 3D modules
Implementing on software and hardware to see 3D modules that we are making. Checking of there accuracy and their limitations
Benefits of the ProjectFirstly, this handheld 3D scanner will be cheaper than most of the market available 3D scanners Moreover, allowing us to further work on it to improve its accuracy.
Secondly, its handheld property will allow us to move the scanner anywhere we like and be able to scan objects outdoors also.
Thirdly, the open-sourced software allows us to work on them and to further research in this field
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThis handheld 3D scanner will be able to create a 3D module of any object by giving the .stl of the model that we want to scan.
