Hand Control Virtual Reality
Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryIn this advanced era of technology, there should be a device or a glove by which we can perform some functions using the concept of virtual reality. It should be something that even if we draw or move our hand in the air, the result will be displayed on a real Computer screen.
Through this project we are trying to implement the concept of Virtual Reality just by using hands as shown in movies, like we can simply wave our hand in front of the computer and move the pointer to the desired location and perform some tasks. Here we will show you how you can simply wave your hand in front of webcam and draw something on your computer. We can navigate from one screen to another by simply waving our hands and dragging screens on air. We can also make clicks on desired places to toggle LED or even draw something on screen.
These all operations could be performed without changing our physical position, like it will be working within some boundary limits or area in range.
Project ObjectivesYou can make your PowerPoint presentations more understandable by using our device instead of holding laser in your hands. You can underline the text in sense to highlight it and draw something virtually in the air and it will be drawn actually on your laptop screen.
Another feature you can be facilitated with is you can easily switch on/off a bulb or led just by moving your fingers.
For Example: At the time of sleeping, the lights of bedroom can be turned off by using this idea. Sometimes, our family members enter in room and turn on lights and leave the room without turning them off back. So, in this situation our project will provide convenience to the users.
Project Implementation MethodWe will be implementing a system that controls computer applications with the help of hand gestures. We’ll be using method, that is able to recognize which gesture is performed by the user by detecting the hand waving and shaking in front of webcam with the help of colored object.
Presently, the webcam and mouse are an integral part of the computer system. Our product which uses only webcam would completely eliminate the mouse while performing some operations related to the usage of mouse and touchpad. Also this would lead to a new era of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) where no physical contact with the device is required in some cases.
The future work will include implementation of additional gestures which will enable the user to perform more functions with ease.
This paper brings out an innovative idea to use the camera instead of mouse. It is useful in presentations and turning lights on/off.
Benefits of the ProjectVirtual reality has made life easier in so many ways. We have implemented a little concept in our project too which will benefit us in the following ways:
- In education sector: While teaching from or presenting a power point presentation, one has to stand near the laptop or projector to point out the main points. But with the help of this glove we can simply underline/highlight the important points from a distance by moving our hand in the air.
- In daily life: In nights when we get all cozy in our beds, someone suddenly comes in our room and leaves without turning off the lights which is indeed so annoying. Well that’s not a problem anymore, you can just turn off the lights without leaving your bed by just pressing your two fingers. Yes, this glove will take care of your comfort too.
Once the glove is ready, you can wear it and get ready for some action. For this you should have a laptop with a web cam on it.
First off, simply power the Arduino and then launch the Application. The LED on the Bluetooth module should go stable. Now it means that your System application has established a Bluetooth link with your Arduino.
Then you will get a screen where you have to select the object to be tracked. This tracing can be simply done by clicking on the object. Now you can move your object and notice that the pointer follows your object. The object should be of a unique color.
Now touch your thumb finger with index finger and a message “Key 1 Pressed” will be displayed and then when you press your thumb with middle finger, the message “Key 2 Pressed” will be displayed. This indicates that everything works fine, and the calibration is over. Now click on the Done button.
Once the Done button is pressed you will be directed to the main screen where you can paint on air or toggle the LED on the Arduino Board.
