Freshwater has very minute concentration of salts which is usually less than 0.5 ppt. Water with a salinity from 0.4 to 16 ppt is called salty water, which is found in estuaries.
Our main aim is to find out the total dissolved salts in the water using the device which is known as Water Salinity Tester (WST). WST is an instrument used to measure the amount of salts present in water. It works on the basic postulate of Total Dissolved Salts (TDS). The reason for creating such a device is to provide an equipment that can help the users to detect the salinity of water so that it may be treated if salinity is increased up to a certain limit. The device can be used both domestically and industrially.
Project ObjectivesOur main aim is to make a device which can display the data on the LCD as well as send the same information over the GSM module to the management systems. One main benefit of such a gear will be its flexibility. By using cell phone, we can use the device over a long range and can increase the boiler’s competency by constantly receiving and saving the TDS value over cell phones and data base. These statistics will help us pinpointing the problems and easiness in detection of salinity.
Project Implementation MethodWe can overcome the above stated problem by constantly checking the quality of the water we are drinking or using in our daily life. In power plants, the same process can be manipulated by inserting the salinity detection device into the boiler’s main stream so that the salinity of water flowing inside the boiler can be measured easily and effectively. As it is mentioned above that if we do not take care of water salinity in the boiler, we can have adverse effects such as boiler’s blast and hotspot formation which can hinder the productivity of boilers [4].
Now a day, many TDS measuring devices are existing which can do the work but using them at high temperatures is rather impossible because of their structure. Also, these devices are incompetent to transfer the data to the required cell phone or data base management system which can be a huge step back in modern day industrialization.
Benefits of the ProjectUsing our proposed WST device, we can:
- Check the TDS value any time we want.
- Set a timer so that we can get an alert after equal interval of time.
- Save the previous data using a dedicated Application on our android or IOS.
- Receive an alert when TDS level rises a certain limit.
- Check the quality of water anywhere anytime.

It detects the presence of salts in water electrically and displays the TDS value using LCD.
