Through this project we both students of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology will develop an android and web application that is going to work for reducing food wastage.

According to a report of FAO (Food and agriculture organization of U.N) every year 1/3 of world's food goes to waste. Today’s food systems are broken. Our diets are the leading cause of disease. Some 800 million people worldwide still suffer from hunger, while more than 2 billion are overweight or obese. Since then, much has changed in the global perception of the problem. Every problem has a solution even at a small level.

FeedieNeedy is an initiative to make balance in food usage. Any person who want to donate food (Minimum of 20 people). For example, food wasted in marriage halls can use this application to donate it to needy and poor people we are then responsible to distribute that food further to needy. While on the other side if anyone who wants its leftover food not to be wasted, even in small quantity can use this application. He or she have to fill a form to give the details about food and the location from where one can pick it and then any one registered who sees that and if find it feasible then can pick it voluntarily and give to someone who is needy.

Project Objectives

Not each and every objective can be written in words but the most clear objectives of FeedieNeedy are as follows.

1. Contributing in the cause of Zero Hunger by providing food to hungry people.
2. Reducing food waste by providing a way to donate your excessive food to be used in a better way.
3. Help donors to make it easy to donate your food to those who need it.
4. Providing a platform to be a donor and to be volunteer who help that donor to succeed in his or her donation by being a pick and drop facilitator.
5. working for the cause of Global climate change as the food waste generates 3.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide.
6. Helping to reduce food prices as the more food waste becomes a reason of increased food prices.
7. Reducing risk of to be expired food going to waste by providing a platform to sell those items quickly at discounts in large amounts. 
8. Feeding undernourished people as just one quarter of all the wasted food could feed 795 million undernourished people around the world who suffer from hunger.  

Project Implementation Method

Every project that needs to be implemented have much different sides so as FeedieNeedy, FeedieNeedy involves two major things.

1. Human Effort
2. Technical Support

If the implementation of FeedieNeedy be divided into particular tasks it will be as follows.

1. Making of team:

Referring to the human effort needed, the first task is to make a team of at least 5-7  members who wish to work effortlessly and voluntarily for the cause of reducing food waste and ultimately Hunger.

        2. Identifying Hunger spots:                                

As FeedieNeedy is area limited (Initiating from Khairpur mir's) but still we can not cover that whole city properly so there is need to identify hunger spots (The places where there are more hungry and needy people).

        3. Establishment of collection point:                   

After identifying hunger spots there is need of a place where we can store food that we call here Collection point.

        4.Development of Application:                          

As the project depends both on human and technology so it requires an app that will work as a medium between a donor and a volunteer (Any person who can pick that food and give it to needy ).                                                                     First step to use this app will be to register yourself and then whenever you have leftover food at your home or anywhere you are you have to open FeedieNeedy, go to donation and add details of your food and your location. Everyone who is registered will be notified about your donation and any one of them who will find it feasible will confirm your request and will pick that food. He or she can give that food to anyone who is needy and comes in his or her way or to any one they know is really needy or also they can drop that food to collection point for further distribution.

        5.Pick and drop of food (That is in large quantity):

As being the initiator of this project we are responsible that maximum of your donations could be used in a better and better way. For sure we can not do it with 100% surety but at least can work to reduce risk of wastage of your donation. For this reason there is a bit different way of picking food and distributing it that is in large quantity.

Whenever anyone has large quantity of extra food for example of about 20 people then you need to go to the private section of donations and add details of your food and location. These details then will be forwarded just to our core team members and you will get confirmation about picking up of your food as soon as possible. One of our team member will come to pick your food and will be distributed at our identified hunger spots.  

Benefits of the Project

Some of the benefits of FeedieNeedy are as follows.

1. Making world much and much hunger free and a better place to live.
2. Reduction in the percentage of food wastage (Per year 1/3 of the food goes to waste).
3. Increased number of donors as it will be easy for people to give their leftover food to be used for better cause.
4. Reduced Green house effect because reduction in percentage of food waste will effect generation of carbon dioxide (As carbon dioxide is the cause of increased green house effect)
5. By preventing one ton of food waste from ending up in a landfill, we can prevent approximately 5 tons of CO2 from being emitted.
6. Food will be available to more people easily because food waste reduction effects food prices, reduction in food waste will be a reason to reduced food prices.
7. Reducing food loss and waste has financial benefits for businesses as well. After all, according to the UN, food waste adds up to a cost of $940 billion a year, a staggering figure.
8. Making world more healthier place to live, less people will be hungry and in result less number of undernourished people.
9. By ensuring the reduction of food waste, we could potentially feed globally everyone suffering from malnutrition. By reducing the tons of food going to waste every year, most of it avoidable, we can expect that food security will improve.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

FeedieNeedy is an android and web based project, if we divide its technical development into different parts its major parts are as follows.

1. Prototyping:

The initial phase after the communication, requirements gathering and planning is prototyping. For the prototyping of FeedieNeedy Adobe XD has been used. Adobe XD is the all-in-one UX/UI solution for designing websites, mobile apps, and more. 

2. Android Development:

Development of FeedieNeedy App will be done in android studio. For the registration of volunteers registration form will be developed in which all the necessary information will be taken. And then whenever a person want to donate something, based on its location with the help of google maps the most nearest persons registered will be notified that someone is wanting your help to transfer his/her donation to a needy.

3. Web Development:

For the development of FeedieNeedy website technologies used are PHP, Javascript (For back end development), HTML, CSS and Bootstrap (For front end Designing).

4. Creating Databases:

For every project we need some data and for its storage and management different databases are used. For the same purpose we need to create a database that will manage our project related data (For example: Details of the volunteers such as their name, Address etc).

To complete this task we will make use of firebase database.

This feature of firebase database allows to evaluate client behavior and make informed decisions.

• Crash Reporting to fix bugs:

Firebase also helps to address performance issues of an app by fixing bugs right from its backend solution.

• Synchronizing data with real time databases

With Firebase you can sync the offline and online data through NoSQL database. This makes the application data available on both offline and online states of the app.
