Feasibility study of an all electric aircraft
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryAll Electric aircraft is the future of the aviation industry. Just like electric cars the electric aircraft is the stepping-stone in modern era of aviation. The electric aircraft uses a very different approach as compared to the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). The aviation industry is responsible for the 2% of Carbon Dioxide emission, so not only this aircraft be able to reduce the air pollution and also the noise pollution as there won’t be any combustion engine. Many countries in the world are introducing the laws for zero emission, for example, Norwegian Government has announced all its domestic route flights to be electric by the end of 2040. Pakistan joined Kyoto and Paris agreements in 2004 and 2016 respectively which makes it a compulsion for Pakistan to reduce the emission of harmful gases. The main aim of the project is to undertake feasibility to operate a aircraft on the electric driven motors without the help of conventional or Primary Fossil Fuels (PFFs). The aircraft will also be able to achieve the higher altitude as oxygen will no longer be the requirement to produce power. The project will cover the detailed study of the concerned aircraft and then its comparison with the other existing electric aircraft, then the study to understand the working principle of batteries to be used. The project will also cover the ICE to Electric Driven Motors (EDMs) conversion studies. The safety factor cannot be overlooked. In the absence of PFFs the fire hazard is scrubbed. Cost efficiency study of the aircraft will also be studied.
Project ObjectivesProject objectives include:
- Literature review related concerned Aircraft.
- Understanding of working of Electric Vehicles (EVs).
- Understanding the working of the Electric Bikes.
- Understand the working of the Lithium-Ion Batteries.
- Detailed Study of existing Electric Aircrafts.
In this project, the methodology followed is as:
- Study specifications of the concerned Aircraft.
- Comparative Study of concerned aircraft with the other Electric Aircraft.
- Electric Vehicle Open Course.
- Lithium-Ion Batteries.
- Visit the hanger to physically check the working of the Engine.
- Study the working of Electric Driven Motors (EDMs).
- Propeller Testing with EDMs.
The need for an all-electric aircraft is imminent it is a stepping-stone in revolutionizing the aviation industry. The disadvantages of ICE are numerous for instance more than 9000+ Californians are killed every year by automobile and truck pollution. Many countries are going for zero-emission aircraft, for example, the Norwegian Government has announced the domestic flights to be all-electric by 2040. Even our neighbor India has announced the plan to phase out EVs by the end of 2030.
Pakistan has responsibility and compulsion to reduce its contribution to harmful gases due to the Kyoto and Paris Agreements. According to the Adviser to Prime Minister of Pakistan on climate change, the target has been set to convert 100,000 automobiles to EVs.
The purpose of mentioning all of this is that this project will help the government of Pakistan in keeping up with agreements it signed as well as help the low laying aviation industry of Pakistan.
Electrical Aircraft is financially more beneficial too. Fuel purchase is one of the main burdens on Pakistan’s National Budget. The driving cost of Electric Vehicle to 15000 miles is $546 as compared to $1255 of the Internal Combustion Engine, which is quite compatible.
One cannot ignore the safety factor. In case of a crash the aircraft will not catch fire and harm the already injured passengers, crew or pilots onboard. Moreover, there won’t be any fuel spark accidents and aircraft cannot flameout during a flight. Hence it will greatly enhance the safety of the personnel.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe Final Deliverables are:
- Feasibility Study of the existing Systems.
- ICE to EDM Conversion Study.
- Documentation of feasibility report.
- Demonstration of a battery-powered propeller.
