Project Summary

As the population is increasing rapidly, the demand for electricity is increasing day by day and more power has been produced to meet this increasing demand. The increased power transmitted through the present transmission lines has put a lot of burden on them producing a lot of faulty conditions on them. 
It is not possible to construct new transmission lines in a quick time frame. Now our main concern is to make our present transmission lines flexible against the instantaneously changing load conditions on them. In order to make transmission lines robust techniques like fixed capacitor banks switched through mechanical switches were used. The problem with them was that they were lacking dynamic capabilities. 

Flexible AC Transmission Lines (FACTS) were introduced which are static controllers to increase controllability and enhance power transfer capability. Static VAR controller is a type of FACTS device which provides dynamically reactive power compensation. SVC provides an excellent source of rapidly controllable reactive shunt compensation for dynamic voltage control through its utilization of high speed thyristor switching. 

Project Objectives

As the transmission lines are overburdened nowadays and are not operating at their full efficiencies and are not able to confront the varying parameters on it.  
Our aim is to: 

  1. Improve  system steady-state stability
  2. Improve system transient stability  
  3. Improve voltage profile on transmission lines 

These all above things ultimately contributes to improve voltage and it’s control on transmission line which thus makes the system more controllable, economical and stable. 

Project Implementation Method

In order to simulate our project we will be using simulation softwares MATLAB, Proteas and Lab view. 
After observing our projects simulated results on softwares we will be start making its hardware. 
We will perform practicals on transmission line modules available in our labs observing behavior of transmission lines under different conditions, then we will design our hardware corresponding to these transmission line module. Now the designed SVC using Solid state relay (Gate pulse controlled through a microcontroller) will be implemented on the transmission module. Finally the desired results will be obtained and the conclusions will be made. 

Benefits of the Project

  1. It increased the power transmission capability of the transmission lines.
  2. It improved the transient stability of the system.
  3. It controlled the steady state and temporary overvoltages.
  4. It improved the load power factor, and therefore, reduced line losses and improved system capability.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product deliverable will be a compact version of Static VAR Compensator. It can be easily connected to the load through connecting plugs. Whenever there will be an unbalance in the reactive power it will start providing the capacitive or inductive reactive power and conpensate it. All the circuitry will be fabricated on a board. The screen on the SVC will show the condition whether it is normal or not. Along with this, the amount of power  compensated and the voltage after compensation will also be displayed on screen. Besides, the feedback system is also provided so that compensated voltage can be compared with the desired reference voltage. Due to the use of electronic circuitry the weight and size of the product will be very small so that it will be portable.
