Fabrication and development of Algae bioreactor for biomass production
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryA photobioreactor is a bioreactor that utilizes a light source to cultivate phototrophic microorganisms. These organisms use photosynthesis to generate biomass from light and carbon dioxide and include plants, mosses, macroalgae, microalgae, cyanobacteria and purple bacteria.
Large systems operating outdoors consist of tubes covering large areas exposed to sunlight and can be operated either in batch or continuously. Tubes are made of either glass or plastic, such as polyethylene. Generally, tubes are grouped in several modules to facilitate control and operation and to offer flexibility to the system in terms of culture volume. CO2 supply systems, such as carbonation towers, pumps for circulating the medium, and tanks to mix nutrients are attached to the solar receptors.
Project Implementation MethodIn this project we are going to use waterfall methodology. The waterfall methodology uses a sequential or linear approach to project completion. The project is broken down into a sequence of tasks, with the highest level grouping referred to as phases.
Benefits of the ProjectIn view of the importance of photobioreactor design in industrial production of biochemicals and especially in matters related to sustainability of human activities on the Earth, such as wastewater recuperation, carbon dioxide recycling, and biofuel production, the photosynthetic processes and its use for bioreactor design have become extremely relevant to reduce the greenhouse gasses effects on the ozone layer and reduced global warming.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableCultivation of Algae in Photo-bioreactors will consist of a main frame made of wood on which the Photo-bioreactors will be mounted. The bottom try will consist of the other equipment which includes the CO2 tank, pump, temperature senor/monitor, PH tester and electrical supply.
