Project Summary

A wheelchair is a chair with wheels, used when walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, old age-related problems, or disability. People who are old or people who cannot talk; need someone who helps them driving their wheelchair. So, our main focus is to design an advanced wheelchair for those patients who are old aged/disabled or cannot speak. Our aim is to build a wheelchair that’ll move with the movement of the eyeball of the person. Eyeball movement causes the movement of the wheelchair according to the eyeball direction. And we adjust the movement according to our desire. This project consists of both hardware and software parts. Our wheelchair contains some extra features like GPS and GSM.

Project Objectives

  • Design & implementation of a prototype in the form of a wheelchair for easy use.

  • Comparison, study and selection of the required electronic equipment including Development kit, motor driver, Pic cam, batteries etc.

  • Assembly of the prototype along with the equipment mentioned above.

  • Complete understanding and implementation of robot technology.

  • Complete integration of the hardware & software portions for the development of the complete prototype.

Project Implementation Method

The principle of this system is eye pupil detection and eye-tracking based on computer vision technology. A new algorithm is introduced for detecting the eye pupil location by Image processing. In this technique, several stages performed to find out the movement of eye, such as Eye detection, color conversion, Edge detection and eye-tracking. During the initial stage, the system acquires the captured images by USB Web camera. The system detects and represents the eye of the user in a specific area of the image. After that, the system performs the several operations of image processing to track the Eye pupil.

Firstly camera module will start to capture the images. Next by using the edge detection technique the detection of the eye region of interest is extracted. It will draw the rectangular box over the Eye. This rectangular box is called a frame. The main target of the system is to detect the eye pupil and to locate its center points. Several image processing operations are performed such as blur Image, color conversion, thresholding, filtering, edge detection, Hough transform. Image Processing based OpenCV library is installed in raspberry pi memory. Now corner and edge detection methods are applied to the extracted area.
Based on the location of the eye in the frame, the wheelchair would move. When the eye location is in the left of the frame, then the wheelchair will turn left side. And when the eye moved is right then the wheelchair will move right. If eye location is up then the wheelchair moves forward, if eye location is tracked down then a wheelchair will move in the backward direction. USB camera is used to capture the image at high pixel rates. In idle condition, the eye will be considered open. Once the power supply is on, the system will start functioning, and according to the command, the values system will work.

Benefits of the Project

This advanced wheelchair would come in handy for those disabled or old aged patients who cannot drive a wheelchair by themselves. This wheelchair would allow such patients to move anywhere they want without anyone’s help. The wheelchair is one of the most commonly used assistive devices to promote mobility and enhance the quality of life for people who have difficulties in walking Wheelchair mobility opens up opportunities for wheelchair users to study, work, engage in social activities and access services such as healthcare. In addition to providing mobility, this advanced appropriate wheelchair benefits the physical health and quality of life of the users by helping in reducing common problems such as pressure sores, the progression of deformities and improve respiration and digestion. This appropriate wheelchair can assist in opening up a new world for the user, from exclusion to inclusion, participation in all societal activities, and sports and recreation, which all lead to independence, better health and improved quality of life.
