Eye tracking based command generator
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryEvery year, around 5% of Pakistan's population suffers from paralysis for various reasons, with most of them falling into the category of quadriplegia. This project focusses on the development of a system that is helpful for the paralyzed patients as it aids them to communicate with other. This project will be beneficial for paralyzed people and specifically for those who can only move their eyes. Over the other projects and already done research eye tracking is chosen as it provides less stress and fatigue to the user. Whenever the patients want to send a particular command to the caretaker, he/she will have to use the eye movements like forced open, forced closed, left gaze and right gaze and the command like water, food, pain and washroom will be sent to the relevant person wirelessly.
Project ObjectivesOur goal is
- To Create a system that allows paralyzed persons to communicate their needs more quickly and effectively and that causes less fatigue and stress in people
- Design a system that can be utilized in both homes and hospitals
- To develop a user-friendly system for paralyzed patients in which they may convey their requirements or feelings simply by moving their eyes.
The eye tracking is done with the help of a web camera and the necessary hardware, which includes a Raspberry pi board that handles the processing. The face is identified first in the python code, followed by the eyes and eye movements. Forced open, forced closed, left, and right gaze are the four eye motions. And the four commands linked with these motions are for indicating a need for drink, food, or the restroom, as well as indicating pain if the user is experiencing it. When any of the four eye movements are detected, the related command is wirelessly communicated to the caregiver or the appropriate person.
Benefits of the ProjectParalyzed persons can effortlessly convey their fundamental requirements, such as need of food, drink, and a bathroom, as well as show their severe emotions, such as pain, through their eye movement. The idea uses an eye tracking-based technique in order to cause the users less stress and discomfort. This technology is useful in both hospitals and homes, making life simpler for patients and caretakers.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable- The extraction of eye movements and identification if any of the four eye movements occur.
- Transmission of the relevant command wirelessly to the caretaker.
