Project Summary

This project creates a new architecture through the extension of an earlier developed generic biosensor interfacing architecture. The generic biosensor architecture was developed earlier by a group of final-year biomedical engineering students. The generic biosensor interfacing architecture was implemented for the measurement and visualization of vital signs. This project extends the generic biosensor interfacing architecture to support a telemedicine setup. A new architecture is developed and implemented using biosensors. The vital signs data is sent to the cloud for storage and visualized for continuous health monitoring. 

Project Objectives

To develop a new architecture based on earlier developed generic biosensor interfacing architecture to support telemedicine service.

To implement the newly developed architecture for the storage of continuous health data in the cloud. 

Project Implementation Method

The team studies the biosensor interface requirements and implement the earlier developed generic biosensor interface architecture. After that, the generic biosensor interfacing architecture will be extended to support a telemedicine service. This is accomplished through the introduction of an internet connectivity module and developing the software for monitored health data stored in the cloud. The data is available to the medical expert for decision making. 

Benefits of the Project

This project is important toward innovations in medical and health sciences for mankind. It will play a vital role in decreasing the communication gap between patient and consultant. The monitored vital signs data aka health conditions are stored in the cloud with analytics capability to ease for the medical expert for decision-making. The implementation is a potential product that can be used to link health data to a hospital information system to support the telemedicine service. A typical implementation is a medical IoT device that can be deployed in the context of Covid-19. The prognosis of infection can be monitored continuously to ease the process of recovery during a crucial situation. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The vital signs are important health data that is acquired using multiple biosensors and visualized after necessary processing through specialized computing. A biosensor is used to measure the live system functions, useful to study its characteristics. Furthermore, there is a need to collect information and store it in a desirable form. A sensor is a term generally used to sense the input which is usually a physical quantity, and then convert it into a suitable signal for processing. Most of the measurements such as temperature which are recorded from the sensor also require some signal processing. For the accuracy and efficiency of these signals, it is necessary to carry out the signal processing for reliable data acquisition. To accommodate multiple biosensors a generic biosensor architecture is developed (Figure 1). 
The architecture has multiple biosensors attached to the data acquisition system through a signal conditioning block. This block includes signal amplification, filtering, and interface connections with the embedded platform. Arduino is used in a typical implementation of the generic biosensor architecture. It converts the analog signal data acquired from the sensor into a digital signal. The digitized values are then sent to Raspberry Pi for the signal processing task, for example, statistical analysis on the data. 
The new architecture introduces internet connectivity to the generic biosensor architecture to develop a new architecture that supports telemedicine services. Internet connectivity also converts the typical implementation of new architecture into a medical IoT device that can be used as a remote unit to continuously monitor the health of a person. The final system demonstrates the support for the telemedicine service in the context of Covid-19. The stored data visualized for the medical expert to make decisions necessary for health recovery.
