Epilepsy Monitoring Band
Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject SummaryEpilepsy is a disorder that affects people of all ages and can cause unpredictable seizures, with severe consequences for patients and their families. Approximately 50 million people in world have epilepsy according to the report of world health organization and 70% of them belong to low and income background and they never get proper treatment. Pakistan has 5% of world epilepsy population, which makes it approximately 2.5 million people. In most of 50% cases it’s cause is unknown, so it has no cure yet. The product which would be outcome of our project consists of a non invasive wearable band for continuous monitoring of seizure activity along with assistive mobile and web applications for the caregiver and doctor. The device would read muscle activities, heart rate and inertial motion of patient and with the help of advance signal processing and machine learning algorithms, it will identify any Generalized Tonic-Clonic (GTC activity) from normal activities. The band would not focus on prediction of seizure rather focuses on logging of information and notification to caregivers. Thus, it is used for the purpose of monitoring and logging the abnormal/seizure activity of the patient during daily routine work. Application will log frequency of seizure, duration and time of seizure on a cloud platform, which can help the doctor in accurate assessment.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of this project is to develop “A wearable epilepsy monitoring band” i.e., an IoT device to keep track of patient’s health conditions and to timely detect seizures and inform caregivers in case of any emergency via mobile application. The device would also be linked to a database to maintain a dashboard of patient’s health history to facilitate the doctors in the treatment. The development of signal processing and machine learning algorithms is also an objective of this project. These algorithms would work at real time and communicate results to mobile application for timely notification to caregivers.
Project Implementation MethodWearable epilepsy monitoring band is based on the fusion of Electromyography (EMG), PPG and Inertial measurement Unit signals for seizure detection. The algorithm will be developed using the features extracted from the data of all three sensors. It will be trained to efficiently detect seizures based on the fusion of all three sensors. The wearable band will be worn on the upper arm and will be further connected to a mobile application through Bluetooth. In case of seizure occurrence, some alert or notification would be sent to caregiver through mobile application, so that assistance can be provided to patient in time. Web application includes dashboard for patient and caregiver/doctor which could be used to access patient’s health history. Web server will store patient’s seizure rates and time durations, accordingly.
Benefits of the ProjectApproximately 50 million people in world have epilepsy according to the report of world health organization and 70% of them belong to low and income background and they never get proper treatment. Pakistan has 5% of world epilepsy population, which makes it approximately 2.5 million people. WHO states that proper by monitoring and treatment, epileptic seizures can be prevented. Considering the fact that seizures are unprovoked and can occur at any time, many patients find it difficult to carry out their normal daily life activities due to state of uncertainty that prevails among them. Physical injuries are common in such patients. These injuries include head, dental injury, burn, fractures, road accidents and submersions. Most of them can be prevented if properly notified and predicted. The patient can then get the first aid in case of seizure onset or can avoid physical activity resulting in such injuries. The wearable device would serve the purpose of continuous monitoring of patient’s health conditions and thus timely detection of any seizure activity. The record of patient’s data will also be maintained on a cloud-based dashboard which will assist the doctors in providing proper treatment to patients based on frequency, intensity, and duration of seizures.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final product will be in form of a wearable band with a PCB having system on chip and the sensors embedded on it. The product will use Bluetooth low energy to communicate with the mobile application for data exchange and in turn the mobile application would alarm the care givers in case of emergency conditions using SMS/call. The mobile application will also be linked to cloud-based data server and it would dump all the data to the server based on the availability of Wi-Fi.
