Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryEnergy loss calculator is a device, which is used to calculate the energy loss due to harmonics in non – linear household appliances. Most of the appliances are power electronic based circuit which draws non-linear current. Non-linear current has fundamental as well as harmonic component, fundamental component is a useful current and harmonic component produces loses in the appliances. Due to advancement in household appliances most of them are power electronic based e.g. LED lights, inverter-based air conditioning system, domestic UPSs, microwave oven, mobile and laptop chargers etc. The cumulative impact of these appliance drastically degrades the power distribution system, increases the energy losses and also increase the energy bills of domestic consumers. We are developing a smart energy loss calculator using STM microcontroller for the monitoring of energy losses due to harmonics produce by household appliances. This meter can be installed in homes or in any commercial building. Energy consumption of a day, week, month or a year can be easily analyzed.
Project ObjectivesThe main objectives of this project are;
- To investigate the harmonic components of nonlinear current drawn by loads.
- To calculate the energy loss due to these harmonic components.
- Development of smart device based on point 1 and 2.
The steps of project implementation are;
- Literature review.
- Circuit designing and calculations.
- Development of schematic diagram.
- Hardware components purchasing.
- Interfacing of current and potential transformer with controller.
- Programming for the Fourier Analysis of the real time signal.
- Energy Loss Calculations based on harmonic components collected through Fourier program.
- Design and implementation using STM controller and display percentage contents of each harmonics with energy loss on LCD.

The final product will help us in finding the voltage, current, power factor, distortion factor and dissipation factor of the electrical equipment. This product will give us fast, robust and efficient results and all the signal computations are totally based on digital signal processing by using STM32F429-Disco Microcontroller. All the measured parameters are shown in real time on the TFT LCD of the micro controller along with this all the parameters are also sent on the PC (LabVIEW software), where the graphs showing the energy consumption patterns are displayed. This meter is entirely based on digital signal processor (DSP) in which signal computations are done to achieve work goals.
