With rapid urbanization and drastic increases in vehicles on the roads, we are facing congestion and manyfold increase in traffic accidents. In Pakistan the number of road accidents is on the rise and according to an estimate it exceeds 2,500. The capital loss is estimated to be more than $9 billion per year, which is equivalent to 4% of the GDP (Ministry of Communication, 2018; Zaman, 2019). In addition to loss of life and property, we are facing degradation in environment. The number of vehicles is expected to rise by 50 million in the year 2025. The urban population is expected to increase by more than 50% by 2050. This project employs an embedded system utilizing all the applications and benefits of Internet of Things paradigm. The objective is to develop a system that gathers data and information from various sources pertaining to characteristics and patters of the ever emerging traffic system in Pakistan.
The main objective of this project is to deploy a prototype of traffic monitoring system, which usses Internet of Things (IoT) to assist in gathering information/data in combination with Artificial Intellegence algorithms for analysis. The system can identify hotspots after monotring traffic patterns.
The project is implemented in two phases: the IoT configuration and deployment and the application of Artificial Intellegence (AI) algorithms to increse understanging of the issues created by uncontrolled increase in urbanization and traffic. In the first phase the IoT devices will be installed in the region of interest and connected to computer via varius types of available networks. Once the deployment is complete and tested, the data will be geatherd for processing by AI algoritms. The system will suggest improvements in the traffice system.
The project aims to reduce loss of life and money due to traffic accidents. Once data is collected from locations of interest in the urbanized area, the system will suggest changes to improve the traffic system.
The proposed system consists of two parts:
1. The IoT deployment in the traffic network/system. This will involve configuration and installation of various types of sensors with the ability to store data or transmit data over communications channels. Multiple types of devices will be tested that use different communicaitons methods.
2. Once the IoT netowk is up and running, the data will be processed by servers to workout suggestions for the improvent of traffic system in Pakistan.
