It is quite well known by parents that children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) often experience difficulties learning to ride a bike, and approximately half of all children with ASD are unable to ride a bike by their 10th birthday.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others.
The behaviors associated with autism include:
Difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning;
Narrow,
Intense interests;
poor motor skills’ and sensory sensitivities.
In this electric tricycle when a kid push at pedal, Dc Motor will assist him to move his legs in forward direction without any extra force and through sensors on pedal it senses the movement and other factors.
Autonomous safety features is used because safety is our first priority ,if there is an obstacle(Wall) in front and somehow that child couldn't stop cycle because of nervousness or any sort of mental disability , the tricycle will stop by it self by sensing an obstacle.
Our objective is to build Electric Tricycle for Special Children with pedal assist which gives the learning ability of legs movement. It has Safety features for children such as obstacle detection.

When a child sits on the seat and applies force on pedal, the controller will sense the force and turn the electric motor on with the preset assistive level to help the child in pedaling. The motor will only assist the child when he is applying force on the pedal otherwise the motor will not turn on.
Safety features are used because safety is our first priority ,if there is an obstacle(Wall) in front of him and he couldn't stop cycle because of nervousness or any sort of mental disability, the tricycle will stop by it self by sensing an obstacle.
We are developing an electric tricycle with pedal assist and safety features that will enable the children suffering with autism to learn to ride a tricycle. Benefits of the project are as follows:
It increases learning ability of legs movement.
It will increase their reasoning and planning ability.
It will reduce their inferiority complex.
It will increase their motor skills and sensory sensitivities.
First of all the user will sit on the tricycle and turn on the switch that will power all the electronics. The lcd will show assist levels that are 30% , 50% and 100% to select. The user will select the level through the button as input. Aftrwards, if the user doesn't pedal, the pedals will rotate backwards with a very little force and speed, it will wait for the user to resist them. Once the user resists and starts pedaling the motor will assist the user as the preset assist level. Torque sensor will be checking the user's force being exerted on the pedals and the ultrasonic sensor will be checking if there is an obstacle within 4 feet distance, if there is a obstacle within 4 feet, brake would be applied automatically. Then the user would need to turn in the direction of free way which would remove the brakes and tricycle will work as normal.
