Efficient Gait Assessment System
The project aim is to deliver an efficient and affordable solution to gait analysis which can be implemented in both clinical and in-home settings because of its compact nature.
The team would be researching on a solution using the Kinect V2 for Xbox and subsequently the Microsoft Azure Kinect. Moreover, a research would also be conducted to develop a solution using the OpenPose library which can extract skeletal keypoints, similar to the Kinect motion sensor.
In terms of interface for the project, efforts would be made to provide a desktop or mobile application which would be accessing data stored on cloud. The app would be accessible by the physiotherapist conducting the analysis.
The crucial objectives of the project is to tackle the persisting problem of expensive and immobile gait analysis systems which make them accessible at very select few health institutions. It is intended that an accessible system such as the Kinect motion sensor one, will be able to give ease of methodology regarding gait analysis.
Such analysis technique being alot more accessible, the physiotherapists and other physicians would be able to detect and treat physical and mental anomalies at a much earlier stage. Anomalies which materialize themselves in gait abnormalities.
The team is looking to implement this project by developing an efficient algorithm which would be able to recieve video input from the Kinect or an ordinary camera and apply techniques to calculate gait parameters such as joint angles and speed.
The OpenPose library would also be researched side-by-side which can allow for much more flexibility in algorithm development.
The project would benefit both the physiotherapists and the patients with its ease of access and affordability. Chronic gait patients can also benefit from the system by keeping it in their own homes. Otherwise, patients can also keep in touch with their doctors through the application which would be sending the gait parameters to the physician. This would reduce the number of visits and appointments required as well.
The cost of the product would also be a benefiting aspect. Replacing the traditional gait analysis systems which cost tens of thousands of dollars per device. An affordable system would make sure that accurate gait parameters are doable more commonly.
The final deliverable would be a hardware + software integrated system. The hardware part would include the Kinect/Azure Kinect motion sensor camera/ordinary camera array. Whereas, the software would include the algorithm implementation and a desktop application.
