Project Summary

Electrical Vehicles(EV's) are now a hot trending subject of the world. Nowadays, EV's are on roads in almost all the developed countries as they are environment friendly & eliminates the need for high-cost fuel like Petrol, diesel, etc.

The types of motors that are in use for electric vehicles are:

  1. AC Induction Motors
  2. Synchronous Motors
  3. DC motors

All the motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. In an electric vehicle, the DC motor is extensively used, so when DC motor draws energy from these vehicles. Then the energy which the motor has absorbed from the battery is almost equally distributed among the stator and rotor. Because of energy going to the rotor, it affects the battery and efficiency of the car and motor. The reason behind this is the I²R losses that occur in the winding of the rotor. Now, if we use the permanent magnets in the rotor instead of the winding, it will eliminate all the losses and increase the efficiency of the battery of the vehicle by almost 50 percent, which is why, we are trying to make a DC motor, which has no winding in the rotor. And because of this, there will be no losses. Besides this, there are many other projects in which we can use this DC motor to increase the efficiency of the product.

Project Objectives

The main objective of our project is to improve the efficiency of Electric Vehicle by eliminating the power losses in the rotor of a dc motor using a winding-less rotor based dc motor.

The "Efficiency Improvement" is in terms of distance travel by an EV with a fully charged battery pack by the implementation of our designed motor & with a typical dc motor.

Now, the elimination of power losses will increase the efficiency of dc motor as well & it will eventually enhance the battery life of the battery pack that will be used for powering the dc motor.

Project Implementation Method

We have divided our project into three parts that will progressively lead us to achieve our main goals.

1st part:

In the 1st part, we have designed our own winding-less rotor based dc motor that is the core part of our project.

To construct a winding less rotor based dc motor, we use a permanent magnet instead of the rotor field winding. For this purpose, we build a stator that produces the rotating magnetic field and a rotor that provide a constant magnetic field.

At the time of testing, we faced the problem of the stuckness of rotor magnetic poles with the poles generated by the stator magnetic field. To overcome this problem, we need to provide the changing magnetic poles mechanism on the stator. For this switching, we use Arduino and a Relay to provide changing magnetic poles on the stator.

2nd part:

After the designing completed, we calculate the ratings of our designed motor & its losses. Then, we'll buy a typical dc motor of the same ratings & we'll calculate its losses in order to make comparisons & to achieve our desired goals.

3rd part:

In the final part, we will implement both the motors one by one on a full batteried battery pack & will calculate our desired outputs.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits that our project will deliver to society are:

  1. Elimination of power losses
  2. Efficiency Improvement of Motor & EV's
  3. The enhanced battery life of battery packs.
  4. Low manintenance cost

and most importantly our project is environment friendly so Sustainability of the environment is one of the best benefits that we'll give to our society

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Technical Details:

We designed a wind??ing-less rotor based dc motor. We will purchase a customizable 12V electric vehicle customizable frame & then implement our motor in it.

We have a battery-pack for powering up the dc motor. We will drive this EV on or motor on fully charged battery-pack & calculate the distance covered by EV & the time consumed by battery to be dischagred.

Then same is the process for the simple dc motor & calculation will be made.

Our motor must cover more distance than the simple dc motor.

Our deliverable project will be :

  1. Our own designed motor.
  2. 12 Electric Vehicle
  3. Battery-pack
