Healthcare is one of the areas in which Pakistan lacks behind even to other developing countries. This is particularly true for rural parts of our country where citizens rely on government funded hospitals for the treatment of their illness. Indeed, many hospitals are understaffed or lack modern electronic apparatus which can be used to monitor patients.
An important part of the hospital is the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), which is used to treat patients which require critical care. Here, it is required that vital signs of patients be continuously monitored so that they can be treated appropriately. In developed countries, each bed in the ICU has electronic modules which can monitor vital signs of patients. However, due to the high cost of commercial monitoring stations (typically imported from abroad) and limited funds, the government is unable to adequately equip ICUs with such monitoring stations. As a result, doctors have to go to each patient individually and manually collect and note down their vital signs data. This is very inefficient utilization of the doctor’s time because it limits the number of patients they can treat at a given time.
Our project seeks to develop an e-health module which can be used to facilitate doctors in taking care of patients. We are working towards the development of low-cost modules which can be fixed with ICU beds in order to continuously collect and store vital signs data from patients. This data will be display on a display unit at their bed, and also be streamed to the duty doctor's office, their smartphone so they are always aware of the patients state of health
Following are the objectives of our FYP:
To develop a data analytics platform based on machine learning for processing e-health data collected using our proposed e-health monitoring system
Following are the key implementation procedures which we shall follow in order to develop the module
The seventh step is to develop three modules (this is dependent on the amount of funding we receive) and install them in ICU.
This project presents a monitoring system that has the capability to monitor vital sign from patients. The key benefit of this FYP is the design and development of low-cost module which can be used to monitor vital signs of patients. The low-cost aspect of the module caters to its potential use in government funded hospitals in rural Pakistan where funds are already scarce.
The key components of our FYP include:
Raspberry Pi 3b as the main processing unit for the FYP
Max30102 sensor for capturing information for heart rate and oxygen saturation
Dht22 sensor for capturing information for temperature
7 inch LCD display for providing live feedback of vital signs for every patient at their bedside
