Project Summary

Healthcare is one of the areas in which Pakistan lacks behind even to other developing countries. This is particularly true for rural parts of our country where citizens rely on government funded hospitals for the treatment of their illness. Indeed, many hospitals are understaffed or lack modern electronic apparatus which can be used to monitor patients.

An important part of the hospital is the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), which is used to treat patients which require critical care. Here, it is required that vital signs of patients be continuously monitored so that they can be treated appropriately. In developed countries, each bed in the ICU has electronic modules which can monitor vital signs of patients. However, due to the high cost of commercial monitoring stations (typically imported from abroad) and limited funds, the government is unable to adequately equip ICUs with such monitoring stations. As a result, doctors have to go to each patient individually and manually collect and note down their vital signs data. This is very inefficient utilization of the doctor’s time because it limits the number of patients they can treat at a given time.

Our project seeks to develop an e-health module which can be used to facilitate doctors in taking care of patients. We are working towards the development of low-cost modules which can be fixed with ICU beds in order to continuously collect and store vital signs data from patients. This data will be display on a display unit at their bed, and also be streamed to the duty doctor's office, their smartphone so they are always aware of the patients state of health

Project Objectives

Following are the objectives of our FYP:

  1. To understand and document requirements for e-health monitoring station from doctors from government hospitals, especially those working in the ICUs
  2. To design a prototype module and test it thoroughly
  3. To develop at least three prototypes and install them in the ICU of a government hospital after seeking appropriate permissions

To develop a data analytics platform based on machine learning for processing e-health data collected using our proposed e-health monitoring system

Project Implementation Method

Following are the key implementation procedures which we shall follow in order to develop the module

  1. The first step is to hold meetings with doctors who work in ICUs in order to develop an understanding of their requirements so that we can design prototype module as per their requirements.
  2. The second step is to integrate sensors with Raspberry Pi modules which measure vital signs data. Based on our discussion with doctors, we have decided to use the MAX30102 sensor from Maxim Integrated electronics. This sensor is a high-sensitivity pulse oximeter and Heart-Rate biosensor.
  3. The third step is to integrate DHT22 sensor and use it for acquiring temperature of patients.
  4. The fourth step is to integrate an 7-inch LCD screen with the Raspberry Pi so that the data from these sensors can be displayed in real-time
  5. The fifth step is to demonstrate the prototype module to doctors in order to receive their feedback before we build more module
  6. The sixth step is to develop a framework based on machine learning in order to analyze data acquired from these sensors and create informative summaries

The seventh step is to develop three modules (this is dependent on the amount of funding we receive) and install them in ICU.

Benefits of the Project

This project presents a monitoring system that has the capability to monitor vital sign from patients. The key benefit of this FYP is the design and development of low-cost module which can be used to monitor vital signs of patients. The low-cost aspect of the module caters to its potential use in government funded hospitals in rural Pakistan where funds are already scarce.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The key components of our FYP include:

Raspberry Pi 3b as the main processing unit for the FYP

Max30102 sensor for capturing information for heart rate and oxygen saturation

Dht22 sensor for capturing information for temperature

7 inch LCD display for providing live feedback of vital signs for every patient at their bedside
