Distributed Power Flow Controller
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryLoad demands nowadays is increasing sharply and to meet those demand, we have to improve the quality of power within the existing transmission system. In power system, quality of power is an important aspect and when this quality of power is not sustained, then large amount of transmission losses can take place. FACTS (flexible alternating current transmission system) devices is capable of controlling power flow through the transmission line by controlling the reactive and active power which provide voltage regulation and system stability. There are different power flow converters including UPFC (Unified Power flow Converters), STATCOM and SSSC.UPFC is the combination of STATCOM which is connected in shunt and SSSC which is connected in series with transmission lines. The DPFC can be considered as a UPFC (Unified Power flow Controller) with an eliminated DC link and multiple small size single phase converters instead on one large size converter in UPFC which provide redundancy and stability to the system.
Though UPFC has the ability to control the balance the line parameters line impedance, transmission angle, and bus voltage magnitude, it is less reliable and cost expensive. Hence we have considered DPFC which has high control capability, high reliability and less cost expensive.
- To do the literature review of the FACTs devices already being used
- To investigate the DPFC topology
- To model the controller
- To implement DPFC for hardware prototype
We have to acquire knowledge of FACTS devices and understand the working of STATCOM and SSSC controllers. Afterwards, we have to understand the literature review of UPFC and DPFC and also their pros and cons. After the literature review, we will model our DPFC controller on Simulink and check the results. At the end, we make a prototype model of our controller to verify it on hardware.
- In the existing transmission system, there are more losses in the lines and the quality of the power is also not good.
- FACTS devices are used to improve the quality of power in the existing transmission system.
- DPFC will improve the voltage regulation and stability of the system and its less cost expensive and more reliable.
- By placing these converters on the transmission line, we can also reduce the load shedding in the country.
