Project Summary

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is a common form of hair loss in both men and women.

Alopecia (al-oh-PEE-shah) means hair loss.

Hair loss is caused by a variety of factors. Hereditary ,  hormonal disorders (thyroid gland disorders, insulin resistance), autoimmune, nutritional disorders, environmental factors (medicines, UV radiation), psychological factors (stress), and ageing.

The damaging factors affect the hair cycle and decrease stem cell activity and hair follicle regeneration capability.

¢Majority of men lose their hair not through stress, or bad diet, or lack of sleep, but through the genetic trait of male pattern baldness which is hard to treat.

Project Objectives

¢ To understand the basics of pattern of hair growth.

¢To study the conditions of androgenic alopecia

¢ To classify new methods for treatment of hair loss.

¢To choose and further analyze a particular method of hair loss treatment.

Project Implementation Method

Two main approaches are under investigation the direct injection of cultured cells or the use of cell secreted factors as a hair growth promoting product.

 It has been shown that cells from the hair follicle mesenchymal tissue can be cultured and then used to induce new hair follicle formation from epithelial tissue.

¢The goal would be to generate the technology to isolate and expand cells arising in a few donor follicles to cover a bald scalp with hair (Fig). Because cells from donor follicles are expanded in vitro, this approach has been also referred to as “hair cloning”.

¢After injection of dissociated hair follicle progenitor cells (A), epidermal cell aggregates form (B).

¢The small aggregate fuse to give rise to epidermal cysts (C), some of which fuse to form large cysts (D).

¢Follicular outgrowths with associated follicular papillae initiate from the periphery of the cyst (E).

¢The follicular outgrowths differentiate and eventually form protruding hair shafts (F).

¢Testing the efficacy and safety of a novel topical treatment for AA which is based on cell culture medium supplemented with insulin, thyroxin and growth hormone (CCM).

¢ This study indicate that CCM promotes growth of hair in the scalp of patients with androgenic alopecia.

For this problem we are studying the treatment and identify best treatment for hair loss.

we are studying or working on cell mediated and hair cloning so that patient don’t have to go for surgical option.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In the near future, a skin biopsy will be taken from a person needing hair replacement, the hair forming cells will be expanded in tissue culture, and then implanted into the skin.
